The objective of this proposal is to investigate the qualification of the process of sociability that promotes Rondonian Masonry, taking as an empirical cut the social profile of its maximum leaders at the state level, namely its grand masters, as well as its deputies. Generally speaking, it is claimed that Masonry is politically influential in numerous countries. In spite of the need for greater consideration of this perception, since one cannot automatically transfer from the political influence of many Freemasons as citizens to the influence of the Masonic Order, there is no doubt that it has effectively participated, as a politically influential institution, in various moments of our History. However, as a superficial reading indicates, this influence has declined in the political sphere over time, leaving the institution influential at the social level. The object of the research is to contribute to an analysis of the penetration of Masonry in the various social segments of the state and how this insertion draws its social profile. If Grand Masters are elected for their leadership in Masonry, that leadership must be the result of some form of social or political prestige external to the order, some prestige derived from the leader's own activity within the Order, or a combination of both. The combination of these elements is not simple. Take the case of the senator for Roraima, Mozarildo Cavalcante. Holder of the mandate of senator of the Republic, he was a candidate for Grand Master General of the Grand Orient of Brazil, one of the Brazilian Masonic powers of national scope. He has run four times for the grand master's degree of the order since 1993, and has lost all four elections, despite being an active Freemason and holding positions within the order and holding positions of power in society. Thus, if in the past the general leadership of Brazilian Masonry was handed over to men of great political or social prestige, such as José Bonifácio de Andrada, D. Pedro II and Luiz Alves de Lima e Silva, over time, and with the fall of the political influence of the order, the cabal for the choice of its grand masters became more complex. The history of Masonry in Rondonian soil is confused even with the initial years of existence of the city of Porto Velho. To read these transformations, it is necessary to consult bibliographies that recorded the empirical processes of constitution of order in this part of the Amazon, a period in which almost everything was yet to be built along the lines of what is called the pioneer front and, later, the expansion front. Finally, free masons from almost all regions of Brazil actively participated in the political life of this part of the Amazon region.

This dissertation seeks to explore and reveal the city of Porto Velho through photography. The focus of the investigation is on the period between the 1940s and 1950s, in the context of the 20th century, when the center of attention was occupied by photographic records. These years are of great importance for the history of the state of Rondônia as a whole, as they witnessed important events that shaped its trajectory. The research aims to draw a comprehensive overview of the main political and economic events that contributed to the historical construction of Porto Velho, capital of the State of Rondônia. Such events include important milestones, such as the creation of the Federal Territory of Guaporé, which later became the Federal Territory of Rondônia, and the second rubber economic cycle in the Amazon region. A particularly notable moment is the visit of then president Getúlio Vargas to the city, which was marked by a significant routine of photographic records. The study approaches photography as a valuable source of research for historians, supporting its potential to uncover social and symbolic aspects through, above all, the architectural marks that persist in the urban landscape of Porto Velho. In this way, this work aims to shed light on the rich history of Porto Velho, revealing the complex layers of meaning that can be extracted from photographic images of the time. At the same time, it is hoped to contribute to a deeper and enriching understanding of the evolution of this city throughout the 20th century.

This research aims to investigate symbolic representations, identities and cultural boundaries in indigenous history on the upper Madeira River through the analysis of iconography in archaeological ceramics classified as Pocó-Açutuba, Barrancoid and Amazonian Polychrome, of the archaeological sites Santa Paula, Veneza and Ilha de Santo Antônio. The plastic and painting techniques are analyzed in order to identify the graphics present in these ceramic assemblages. The artifacts found at these sites date from between 3200 and 420 AP: The Pocó-Açutuba Tradition, the oldest, and the Barrancoid Regional Style, both associated with peoples of the Arawak cultural matrix; and the Amazonian Polychrome Tradition, associated with Tupi peoples. We questioned which graphics were elaborated on the ceramics, their variations in space and over time, as well as which symbolic representations were present, focusing on the peoples of the Arawak cultural matrix. In order to achieve the research proposal, we contextualized studies on the Arawak and Tupi in the area covered by the study; then, using samples of Pocó-Açutuba, Barrancoide and Polychrome ceramics, an analysis was carried out of the designs present on the larger fragments, in which it was possible to identify the motifs; last but not least, we discuss the interpretation of the typologies in order to elucidate the recurrences and specificities present in the sites studied.

Porto Rolim de Moura do Guaporé, is located on the Mequéns River and is a district belonging to the municipality of Alta Floresta D´Oeste, located in the interior of the State of Rondônia. The formation and history of this space was due to processes of colonization of the Amazon that brought together different ethnic groups, indigenous people, quilombolas, rubber tappers, Bolivians, settlers and squatters. Indigenous and non-indigenous people live in the locality, living and coexisting in the same territory, subject to intense territorial disputes. This multi-ethnic coexistence is extremely conflictual. The indigenous peoples of the Wajuru ethnic group face an intense struggle in this space for environmental protection, for the preservation of their historical cultural heritage and demarcation of their territory, which is an ancient demand, historically built through the militancy and political protagonism of the indigenous peoples who live there, since they have always lived under the threat of losing their territory. We will deal with the topic from a present-day historical perspective, whose main interest is to report the situation experienced by the Wajuru people in the face of constant threats of invasion of their lands and the surrounding conflicts.

This research proposes to share an ethnographic study on the historical-cultural heritage of Wajuru indigenous people and quilombolas present in Rolim de Moura do Guaporé (RO). Our aim is to understand the historical processes of occupation of the Guaporé Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries that brought together Wajuru and Quilombola indigenous peoples, who contributed to the formation of a multicultural and pluriethnic territory in the Guaporean Amazon. In this way, the social historical processes are crucial for the composition of the history of these peoples, as well as the study of existing cultures and sociocultural dynamics, their experiences that allow cultural loans, in order to understand the conceptions of cultures as a historical repertoire, identity affirmation , memory and traditional knowledge. Composing this sociopolitical and economic research context, we seek to understand the conception of cultural heritage beyond the colonialist concept, where social groups, the focus of our research, are ignored, considered as non-existent heritage and that have nothing to safeguard, since who are on the margins of the hegemonic society. The historical heritage of Wajuru and Quilombola indigenous peoples make up the systems of signs, symbols that intertwine and that also present particularities in a way that significantly cooperate with the rich cultural diversity of Rondônia and that will be registered in this work.

This dissertation presents a study about illicit markets impacts on the culture and social structure of the Kaxarari people, located on the States of Rondonia, Acre and Amazonas border, from the perspective of sustainability and economy. The research central objective to analyze the conditions that encourage the grooming of indigenous people and the practice of environmental crimes that fuel the illicit market, as well as their influence on the culture and social structure of the aforementioned indigenous community, in the period between 2010-2020. The aim was to map the reality experienced by this ethnic group, regarding to the survey of the main illicit markets and the way in which such markets impact the culture and life dynamics of the Kaxarari people. Another important aspect discussed are the protective actions offered by the State to combat violence against these original peoples, given that this is a determination guaranteed by law. This is an investigation with a qualitative approach, supported by the theoretical assumptions of exploratory research, with data collection carried out through semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis and analysis of facts and phenomena that make up the object of study. Important theorists support this discussion, among which the following stand out: Aron (1997), Baniwa (2015), Bourdieu (1989), Foucault (1999; 2014), Silva (2015), Quijano (2009), Cunha (1992) e Aguiar (2018) e Bardin (2011). The Coordinator of Indigenous School Education of the Regional Education Coordination of the District of Extrema and the Superintendent of the Federal Police in the State of Rondonia contributed as sources for the interviews. The analysis of the collected information was developed using Content Analysis (Bardin, 2011). As a result, it was demonstrated that in the last decade, occurrences of violence and illegal acts against the Kaxararis have been increasing, with emphasis on illegal logging, expropriation of the territory by criminal farmers, death threats and grooming of indigenous people, from different perspectives. In the social structure, aspects about youth and indigenous school education were highlighted in the analysis of the interviews, highlighting in this context the absence of an intercultural educational proposal and the uncertainties regarding identity and culture.

The research in question deals with the incarceration of women based on the Criminal Information Report. The objective is to analyze the profile of the female population deprived of liberty in the state of Rondonia. Documentary study (GIL, 2002) carried out in the Criminal Information Report - RELIPEN 1st semester of 2023. The theoretical contributions of Perrot (2007) women; Foucault (1987) when addressing the historical context of sentences and prisons over time; Hermann (2018), Monastero (2017) who discuss female incarceration in the country were important so that the study could be discussed, the current legislation (BRASIL, 1984, 1988, 2016) also endorsed the discussion proposed in the objective. Analysis of the document allows us to affirm that women deprived of liberty in the state of Rondonia are marked by a lack of education, have children, do not receive visits from their families, and consider themselves brown. Replicating the national context in parts. Policies that are ineffective and lack continuity contribute to population growth. The State's failure to assume responsibility and carry out policies that actually aim to change the lives of women deprived of their liberty. To this end, it is necessary to consolidate policies that precede female incarceration, giving them different opportunities to pursue.

This dissertation addresses the Recent Colonization of Rondonia between the years 1970 and 1990, exploring the integration of the Amazon into the Brazilian center-south. Using Decolonial Theory, it analyzes the role of INCRA and capitalist dynamics, highlighting social, economic, political, and cultural aspects faced by migrants attracted by the idea of State Development and traditional populations that came into collision with Colonization. The research aims to contribute to the debate, considering the relationship between development policies and the Coloniality of Power. The methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, prioritizing local sources, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of "development" on traditional peoples. The structure of the work comprises three chapters, each addressing specific aspects of the recent colonization process of Rondonia. The results obtained, albeit partial in nature, provide a critical analysis of the relationships between the Amazon, Development, and the Coloniality of Power. By delving into the intricate layers of these phenomena, we aim to offer a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the dynamics that have shaped and continue to shape the reality of this region, with the hope of contributing to further reflections on the debate we propose here.

This research in question aims to present the trajectory of citizens called soldados da borracha (rubber soldiers) as war fighters from enlistment to tragic social oblivion, which persists to this day. The recruitment of these individuals was from 1942 to 1945. The importance of soldados da borracha to the war effort alongside the Allies is comparable to the soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who went to fight in Italian territory. Not only the Getulista government - which broke several promises made to soldiers who fought in the Amazon rainforest - but also Brazilian society itself forgot and did not give due value to the rubber heroes, whose efforts kept the Allied war machines running until total victory.

This work seeks, through the study of economic history, to understand how the socioeconomic formation of the state of Rondônia took place and, from this, to analyze the indices of economic growth and development. The general objective is to describe the historical process, from the economic point of view, of the state of Rondônia, in order to compare the historical indices of economic growth and development. The research carried out is based on qualitative-quantitative. Bibliographic research was used to investigate the structure and socioeconomic formation of the state of Rondônia, using qualitative research as a technical procedure, as well as the forms and methods of data evaluation. Regarding the procedures, the historical, comparative, statistical, qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Data on GDP, GDP per capita, GINI, HDI, infant mortality, and life expectancy at birth were analyzed. The results indicate a significant advance in the indicators that measure economic growth and development in Rondônia. The State was successful in its economic projects for the region. The indices show that Rondônia is advancing in income production and economic development; With each passing year, it presents evolution in the indices that measure the well-being of its population. We conclude that the economic growth fostered in the state of Rondônia was able to generate economic development and well-being for the population. However, improvements are still needed to mitigate the environmental degradation and poverty that persist.

During the Military Regime, especially from the 1970s onward, indigenous peoples, particularly those from the Amazon, faced numerous illegal complications, such as land invasions, land grabbing, expulsions, and massacres, the consequences of which persist to this day. During this same decade, the actions and attitudes of the Apurina stood out socially, as they became protagonists in the fight for rights, especially in securing their lands. From this perspective, the research analyzes the conflicts and resistances of the Apurina in the process of demarcating the indigenous lands of Km 45, Km 124, and Camicua in Boca do Acre, Amazonas, from 1978 to 1990. To meet this demand, a bibliographic review of academic productions about the Apurina is conducted. In addition, the Apurina's confrontation against land grabbing and the authoritarian practices of land grabbers, farmers, and politicians is addressed. Finally, a mapping of the territorial demarcation processes of the Apurina in Boca do Acre is carried out, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and achievements of this indigenous group during this period. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative approach is proposed, utilizing a wide range of sources to provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon analyzed. The sources include documents produced by governmental agencies such as FUNAI, AJACRE, and INCRA, as well as records from non-governmental agencies, such as CIMI data (reports and periodicals), and information from regional and national alternative newspapers. This study also proposes the application of Content Analysis for handling the information contained in the sources used. Thus, through this research, it is aimed to highlight the protagonism of the Apurina in the process of demarcating their lands. Additionally, it is believed that the results obtained may highlight the presence of the authoritarian apparatus of the military regime, as well as the actions of the opponents of the Apurina cause, who used political power to perpetrate illegal acts, such as the invasion of indigenous lands.

Between 1819 and 1820, renowned naturalists Johann von Spix and Carl von Martius embarked on an expedition through the vast captaincy of Rio Negro. During this journey, in addition to detailed observations of the rich fauna, flora and geography of the region, the Germanic duo also dedicated themselves to recording the intricate cultural aspects of the different indigenous groups they encountered along the way. Among these cultural aspects, mortuary practices stand out, which were meticulously documented by explorers in relation to ten native peoples, who differed mainly due to their linguistic affiliation. The reports produced by travelers’ highlighted peculiarities and significant variations between mortuary practices, both between groups belonging to the same linguistic family and among those who did not share such linguistic affinity. The analysis of these accounts not only presents a detailed understanding of the rites of passage of these indigenous communities, but also provides valuable insights into the cultural complexities and diversities present in the Rio Negro region during the 19th century. In addition to describing these mortuary rituals, this study also seeks to contextualize them within the broader framework of intercultural relations and power dynamics of the time. It is important to consider how travelers' notes may have inadvertently influenced the process of concealment or subordination of the indigenous "Other" as conceptualized by modern decolonial scholars. By critically examining these historical records, we can glimpse not only the cultural richness of the indigenous peoples of the Rio Negro, but also the ways in which the Eurocentric gaze can distort or obscure their practices and traditions.

The text presents a research proposal aimed at uncovering the social history of women who contributed to the construction and maintenance of the state of Rondonia, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the writing of this history. The research is driven by the following question: How has the historical trajectory of women in Rondonia taken shape, based on their roles, actions, and significant contributions through practices between the 1970s and 1990s? Although traces in history indicate that women were always present, they were relegated to the background, their contributions often limited to memory and excluded from the formal elucidation of the state’s history. This research is empirical in nature. Its first phase involves documentary research, which includes a study of theorists and literature on gender relations and the historical construction of the state of Rondonia. For data analysis, narratives will be collected, using Oral History methods. The presentation of results will be based on the argumentation techniques of the New Rhetoric by Perelman and Tyteca (2005). The results of interviews with pioneering women in Rondonia are presented and discussed in light of previous studies on the topic. The goal was to analyze these women’s narratives regarding their roles in the historical, social, and cultural development of the state. The interviews used biographical methods and were analyzed to identify key themes related to women’s contributions in the region. Selected dialogues represent the primary arguments extracted from the interviews. These narratives highlight the migration of these women to Rondonia in search of better opportunities, often accompanying their husbands. They faced challenges such as lack of infrastructure, precarious working conditions, and the need to balance domestic and professional responsibilities. Despite these adversities, the interviewees demonstrated resilience and creativity, adapting and contributing significantly to their communities. The experiences of these women underscore the importance of family relations and aspirations for a better life in their decision to migrate. The narratives of these pioneering women in Rondonia emphasize their resilience and contributions in health, education, and leadership. They overcame challenges and paved the way for future generations. Their stories enrich historical understanding and celebrate the diversity of experiences.

This work proposes a reflection on the actions of the District of Santo Antonio on the rubber plantations of the Madeira River, through the analysis of processes dating from 1912 to 1918. Using historiographical and journalistic sources and official reports, we will investigate the presence or absence of the State in rubber production areas. Just like, through Foucauldian understanding, how power relations occurred, with the arrival of a State institution, in environments dominated by rubber barons, as well as the Madeira River valley. We will question to what extent these different authorities collaborated or disputed dominance; and if with the decline of the rubber economy, rubber growers became more susceptible to renouncing privileges. To this end, we will introduce the research by pointing out theoretical-methodological issues that guided this production. Then, as an initial part of contextualization, we will describe the First Rubber Boom focusing on the violent ties created by the debt-bondage between rubber tappers and rubber barons. Soon after, we will present Santo Antonio and its strict relationship with the rubber economy; In addition, we will discuss the concepts of State and power, to then talk about the arrival of the District, its actions, and the working conditions of the police force in the region. Finally, we will directly analyze the processes of the Judicial District.

This dissertation examines the significant influence of the press in the formation of the Federal Territory of Guapore, now known as the State of Rondonia, during the administration of Getulio Vargas. Initially part of the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, the region underwent profound transformations during the peak of natural rubber production in Brazil. Landmark initiatives, such as the construction of the Madeira-Mamore Railway and the establishment of telegraphic lines connecting Mato Grosso to Amazonas, catalyzed migration and settlement, fostering the emergence of journalistic activity. This initial momentum, occurring at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, was later disrupted by the economic decline of the rubber sector. The sector’s revitalization materialized only during World War II, a period marked by the creation of the Federal Territory of Guapore by Vargas in 1943, alongside significant social and political changes in which the local press played a pivotal mediating role. Regarding regional journalism, early efforts focused on publishing English-language periodicals catering to foreign railway workers, ultimately leading to various initiatives to establish local newspapers. Among these, the Alto Madeira, founded in 1917, emerged as the most prominent communication vehicle during the study's timeframe, spanning the 1930s to the 1950s. Although Alto Madeira has been recognized as a source in several historical investigations about Rondonia or Porto Velho, there is a noticeable gap in research treating it as the central subject of study. This research aims to analyze the role played by the Alto Madeira, particularly its involvement in key events of the time, its elevation of Colonel Aluizio Ferreira, and its interaction with the censorship mechanisms of the Estado Novo regime. By aligning itself with the central government’s actions, the newspaper supported political and administrative transformations in the region. Acting as a spokesperson for central authorities and aligning with dominant political and business classes, particularly rubber barons with commercial interests in the rubber trade, the newspaper functioned as a "party" in Gramscian terms. Methodologically, this study adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, supported by an extensive bibliographic review encompassing both primary and secondary sources. This approach facilitated a nuanced understanding of the interactions between the press, political power, and prevailing social transformations. Critical analysis of articles and editorials from the newspaper enabled an assessment of media influences on local politics and social dynamics in Rondonia. The examination of Alto Madeira’s content underscored its historical significance, fostering a deeper reflection on power relations and the sociopolitical contexts in which journalism operated. This analysis identified patterns and trends that enhance the understanding of the relationships among media, society, and power. Such an approach may inspire further investigations on the subject, positioning journalism as an essential tool for studying history and comprehending past events while promoting a critical perspective on contemporary realities. Thus, this study contributes to the broader debate on the role of the press within Rondonia’s sociopolitical context, highlighting its function as both a mediator and an active participant in shaping historical narratives and societal developments. Methodologically, the research was conducted from a qualitative and exploratory-descriptive perspective, through an extensive bibliographical review that included both primary and secondary sources, allowing for a deep understanding of the interactions between the press, political power, and ongoing social transformations. Critical analysis of newspaper articles and editorials enabled an assessment of media influences on local policies and the social dynamics of Rondonia. The examination of content produced by Alto Madeira highlighted its historical importance, facilitating a reflection on power relations and the sociopolitical contexts in which journalism is embedded, aiding in identifying patterns and trends that enhance the understanding of the relationships between media, society, and power. This approach can encourage deeper investigations into the theme, positioning journalism as an essential tool for studying history and understanding past events, fostering a critical view of reality. Thus, the study contributes to the debate on the role of the press in the sociopolitical context of Rondonia.
