  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The overall objective of this study is to analyze the historical and cultural impacts caused by the forced migration that occurred with the implementation of the Jirau hydroelectric plant, as well as to understand how this displacement interfered with the maintenance of the cultural identity of the individuals relocated from the Mutum Paraná community. To achieve this objective, we listed the following specific objectives: to analyze how the Jirau plant was implemented and how the migration of the Mutum Paraná population occurred; to identify the social impacts of the implementation of the Jirau plant; and to learn about the relocated community and aspects of its cultural memory. The research problem sought to answer the following questions: What were the historical and cultural impacts caused by the forced migration that occurred with the implementation of the Jirau hydroelectric plant? And how did this displacement interfere with the cultural identity of the individuals relocated from the Mutum Paraná community? To achieve the objectives and answer the research questions, we used field research as our methodology, working with the Nova Mutum Paraná community and the Jirau hydroelectric plant, both located in the municipality of Porto Velho.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation analyzes the historical and socioeconomic development of the municipality of Igarapé-Miri, in the state of Pará, based on two fundamental production cycles: sugarcane agriculture, predominant in the 19th century, and the agro-extractive production of açaí, consolidated as the main local economic activity from the end of the 1990s. The study constitutes a continuation of research developed in the community and completed in 2022, being resumed with new objectives aimed at expanding, deepening the analysis, and updating the data, in order to provide greater interpretative density to the work previously carried out. In this new stage, interviews were conducted with 15 of the community's most experienced residents, prioritizing individuals who, due to their life trajectory and insertion in local work, could offer more consistent historical, social, and economic insights, complementing the information obtained in the previous phase, in which contact with the younger population predominated. This research examines the historical contexts of each production cycle, the forms of work organization, the social relations established in the production processes, and the impacts of these activities on the economic and social structure of the municipality. The methodology adopted is qualitative in nature, based on documentary research, serial history, case study, and oral history, through semi-structured interviews with workers and residents of the region, articulating different sources and analytical perspectives. The results show that, although the sugarcane cycle played a central role in the economic formation of Igarapé-Miri, it was associated with labor relations marked by exploitation, precariousness, and conditions close to slavery, contributing to the reproduction of historically consolidated social inequalities. In contrast, the expansion and consolidation of açaí agro-extractive activities promoted greater productive autonomy for workers, expanding their possibilities for work organization, income generation, and insertion into regional markets, even though this new cycle presents structural challenges, such as price instability, production seasonality, dependence on intermediaries, and limitations in community organization. It is concluded that the transition between these two production cycles profoundly redefined the economic, social, and territorial dynamics of Igarapé-Miri, revealing significant advances in working conditions and income, but also the persistence of historical obstacles that continue to challenge the regional development process, highlighting the complexity of socioeconomic transformations in the Amazon region of Pará.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation examines how the Estado Novo (1937–1945) sought to appropriate the social process of nation-ness formation and transform it into state policy, institutionalizing an official national identity and projecting it onto the Amazon, with particular emphasis on Porto Velho between 1930 and 1945. Grounded in a qualitative and exploratory approach, the research combines a systematic literature review (2010–2024) with documentary analysis of primary sources, especially materials from CPDOC/FGV, the journal Cultura Política (linked to the Department of Press and Propaganda – DIP), and the regional newspaper Alto Madeira. The study examines the mechanisms through which Vargas-era nationalism was disseminated as a form of political pedagogy—articulating culture, propaganda, and centralization—and how these discursive frameworks were recontextualized in the local press, particularly through narratives of territorial integration, modernization, and social discipline associated with initiatives such as the “March to the West” and Vargas’s presidential visit to Porto Velho in 1940. It argues that, in Porto Velho, the incorporation of official nationalism operated with strong symbolic density, mediating tensions between center and periphery and contributing to framing the Amazon as a strategic frontier within the national project.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research is based on 19th-century travel accounts, primarily that of the English engineer Edward Davies Mathews, which was translated into Portuguese and published in 2022 by Hélio Rodrigues Rocha under the title Journeys on the Amazon and Madeira Rivers – (Brazil), Bolivia, and Peru (1872–1874). The objective of this research is to present the Amazon of the 1800s–its culture, economy, and society – primarily around the Madeira, Mamoré, and Guaporé rivers, in the stretch marked by waterfalls, and the neighboring country, Bolivia. The context of these selected accounts is set against the first rubber boom and the transformations that the export of this product was generating in the Amazon region, one of the consequences of which was the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway. Through these accounts, it is possible to glimpse an Amazon of yesteryear. These literary narratives were precisely researched to construct an overview of regional history in the area corresponding to the current state of Rondônia and to nineteenth-century Bolivia. The accounts of Mathews and other travelers were also examined within a decolonial interpretive framework, thereby analyzing their discourses and intentions. In this sense, it was possible to identify a common profile among these travelers and to see their discourse as a means of legitimizing imperialist intervention in the region. Furthermore, this legacy left by the travelers is used as a historiographical artifact for connecting, comparing, and observing the relationship with the literary field. The use of these two disciplines was identified to generate literary works that intensified foreigners’ interest in the Amazon, even though, often, these messages were not clear to readers and, above all, to the true interests of the Amazon region.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation investigates the articulation between the 1934 Forest Code and the 1940 Amazon River Speech as expressions of a policy of rationalization and control of nature in the context of the Estado Novo (1937-1945), with an emphasis on the Amazon. The general objective is to analyze how these legal and rhetorical instruments constructed a narrative of integration of the region into the authoritarian and modernizing project of the Vargas government. The research adopts a qualitative approach based on documentary and theoretical analysis. The corpus includes the Forest Code, the Amazon River Speech, the journal Cultura Política (from the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library), posters and photographs by Jean Pierre Chabloz (from the MAUC/UFC collection), as well as contemporary newspaper reports (Correio da Manhã, A Noite, Correio do Ceará, O Estado). The theoretical framework articulates the concepts of symbolic power (Pierre Bourdieu), hegemony (Antonio Gramsci), and governmentality/pastoral power (Michel Foucault). The results demonstrate that: (1) pre-1930 Brazilian environmental criticism already linked conservation to economic progress, constructing the Amazon as a “void” to be conquered; (2) the 1934 Forest Code classified forests into four categories (protective, remnant, model, and yield), subordinating conservation to the logic of yield and creating surveillance devices that proved ineffective in practice; (3) the March to the West and the Amazon River Speech translated this rationality into epic rhetoric, and the Rubber Battle materialized the predatory exploitation of workers and the forest; (4) the journal Cultura Política and DIP propaganda consolidated consensus around authoritarian modernization, forging a bandeirante tradition and the figure of Vargas as a shepherd-leader. The conclusion is that the Forest Code and the Amazon River Speech were not environmental protection instruments but materializations of an authoritarian modernization that subordinated nature to the logic of economic progress and national security, a legacy that persists in contemporary agrarian conflicts and deforestation in the Amazon.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation investigates pre-colonial Indigenous occupations in the Guapore River region (Rondonia, Brazil), focusing on the analysis of ceramics from the Joao Durao archaeological site, located between Seringueiras and Sao Francisco do Guapore. The research aims to correlate the ceramic remains with the Jasiaquiri, Bacabal, and Corumbiara/Pimenteira phases, while also discussing their potential association with Arawak-speaking peoples, based on zoomorphic appliques (bird and bat heads) as iconographic markers. The Guapore region has a long history of human occupation, with records dating back 14,700 years BP, featuring diverse archaeological sites such as geoglyphs, mounds, and earthworks. The ceramics analyzed at Joao Durao revealed two distinct components: an older one with traits similar to Jasiaquiri pottery (incised decorations and simple forms) and a more recent one with technological and decorative features akin to the Corumbiara/Pimenteira and Bacabal phases. Methodologically, the study employed techno-morphological analysis of ceramic artifacts, examining aspects such as form, decoration, and function, alongside relative dating through comparisons with materials from other regional sites. The findings suggest that Joao Durao may represent either distinct occupations or a cultural transition linked to a multiethnic system, similar to patterns observed in Llanos de Mojos (Bolivia). Despite similarities with Jasiaquiri ceramics, the Joao Durao materials predate their Bolivian counterparts, raising questions about cultural flows and interactions between Arawak and Tupi groups in the region. Ultimately, this study contributes to the archaeological historiography of the Guapore, emphasizing the role of material culture in reconstructing the social, technological, and identity-related dynamics of Indigenous peoples within a longue duree framework.

  • In the recently created Federal Territory of Guapore, whose electoral colleges were limited to Porto Velho and Guajara-Mirim, disputes for political power and, consequently, control of the state administrative and bureaucratic apparatus, through the occupation of public positions and functions , divided the local elite. Some positioned themselves alongside Aluizio Ferreira and others were supporters of Joaquim Vicente Rondon. Over time, other subjects were involved in the dispute and, consequently, the differences and conflicts in the political environment reached the most popular layers of society with greater intensity, being divided between cutubas and peles curtas. We can say that it all started with the inauguration of Aluizio Ferreira as the first governor of the Territory, in 1943, and ended after the civil-military coup of 1964, with the increase in persecution of regionalized political and social movements. The newspapers of the time, especially Alto Madeira and Guapore, old and recent works recorded this period and the trajectory of the social agents involved in the dispute for local power. However, sources from the judiciary (criminal proceedings, criminal complaints, investigations) of an unprecedented nature, will compose, together with newspapers, the set of sources to be used to analyze the complexity of this regional historical moment marked by conflicts between different members of the elite. location.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research examines the experiences of Haitian immigrants living in Porto Velho, Rondonia, with an emphasis on the construction of memories, identities, and senses of belonging. Using oral history as the central methodology, the study seeks to understand how these individuals articulate their experiences of displacement, struggle, and reconstruction in a context marked by social inequalities and exclusionary representations. More than just reporting trajectories, the research investigates how immigrants interpret their own stories, construct meanings about work, exclusion, and recognition, and confront discourses that associate them with a perceived threat. Grounded in authors such as Halbwachs, Hall, and Tomaz Tadeu da Silva, the study proposes a critical reading of the representations constructed about immigrants in the Amazonian space, highlighting the political dimension of listening and memory. By centering the voices of these individuals, the research contributes to the debate on identity, difference, and resistance in the context of contemporary migrations.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This study aims to discuss innovative methodological proposals for teaching the history of Rondonia, using the Technical Reserve of Archaeology of the Federal University of Rondonia (UNIR) as its basis. The COVID-19 pandemic imposed significant challenges on teachers, who had to reinvent their teaching and learning strategies remotely, incorporating tools such as gamification on digital platforms. However, it is essential to recognize that the teaching of history in Brazil is still marked by a Eurocentric perspective, which places Europe at the center of knowledge. This approach is particularly problematic when it comes to teaching the history of Rondonia, where archaeology and ancient history are essential for understanding the region's identity. In Rondonia, we still see didactic materials used in public schools perpetuating this Eurocentric discourse. It is understood that the teaching of history is an area of research in constant construction by historians and public school teachers. Moreover, in this area, there is gamification as a methodological form of educational innovation, using methods that activate the competitive mode, teaching-learning, historical awareness, and critical thinking of students in the classroom. Given this scenario, fundamental questions arise: Is it possible to use gamification in dialogue with the decolonial historiographic debate as a learning strategy in history teaching? Can the incorporation of games make the archaeological collection of UNIR more accessible and attractive to students? Is it possible to rethink the most remote past of the Amazon as historical learning in public basic education, based on the sources of the archaeological collection? With the objective of answering these questions, this study aims to create an interactive game based on the collection of the Technical Reserve of Archaeology of UNIR, aimed at public schools in Porto Velho. In addition, it seeks to stimulate the historical awareness of the student as a subject of history, using gamification, curiosity, and critical thinking for citizenship in the social school space. The methodology used will be a mixed approach, qualitative and quantitative, and bibliographic, incorporating data from the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), the Curricular Reference of the State of Rondonia (RCRO), objects from the Technical Reserve of Archaeology of UNIR, and productions of materials and diversified works. Finally, this study highlights the importance of continuing to explore new teaching and learning strategies that can help make the teaching of the history of Rondonia more attractive to students.

  • Resumen Espectáculo

  • This research stems from a desire to understand the presence of indigenous women, especially those from Rondonia, in the context of cities and communities in indigenous territories, based on social movements both within and outside the community. Within a decolonial proposal, the construction of the work was based mainly on indigenous community feminism in the observation of the participation of indigenous women in the indigenous movement, which took the form of conversation circles and indigenous mobilizations that can be found throughout the text, but especially in the last chapter. The articulation and participation of indigenous women from Rondonia, in the context of cities and indigenous communities, as well as those from Porto Velho. Contextualizing Indigenous Community Feminism: a perspective of struggle and organization of indigenous women. The body of this research is dedicated transversally to an approach to the theme of Abya Yala in the context of indigenous community feminism, delving into the reality of indigenous women. It presents qualitative data and reflections on the inclusion and participation of indigenous women in the indigenous movement, as well as the challenges they face. There are many misunderstandings about indigenous community feminism in relation to indigenous women. The presence of these women in the indigenous movement has strengthened the struggle of indigenous peoples and is gaining momentum. A reality that was far from being recognized, the movement brings the voice of indigenous women, breaking the silence. This qualitative data further corroborates the struggle of the peoples, in which indigenous women, unlike non-indigenous women, live totally different realities. They are women who, inside and outside their communities, do not give up fighting for the guarantee and defense of their rights as indigenous peoples. In this way, I seek to collaborate so that the postgraduate course in Amazonian History at the Federal University of Rondonia Foundation can improve knowledge about the historical reality of indigenous women in Rondonia. Finally, it is evident that community feminism is based on the principle of depatriarchalization, through the collective community struggle of indigenous women's “ancestral memory.”

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research examines the cultural conflicts embedded in the Amazonian spaces, including Porto Velho (Rondonia), focusing on the arigos as historically active agents in shaping the Amazon as a plural cultural frontier. The study is linked to the Graduate Program in Amazonian History (PPGHAm-UNIR) under the research line “Populations, Ethnicities, and Culture: Uses and Representations.” The central problem revolves around the cultural clashes in the Amazon, analyzing the meanings, movements, and representations of arigos in the region’s historical construction. The theoretical framework draws on Bhabha (1998), Hall (2005), Benchimol (1999), Jayme Ferreira (1999), Teixeira (2020), and Fonseca (1998), addressing the historical narratives and imaginaries between Northeastern and Northern Brazil, including governmental actions amid capitalist ambitions before and after Vargas’ dictatorship during WWII. The dissertation’s primary objective is to understand the social, cultural, and political effects of elite influence on the arigos’ cultural formation, alongside their historical erasure by the Vargas regime through acculturation and behavioral reengineering (Fonseca, 1998, p. 38). It also explores urbanization processes during arigo migrations across 20th-century Amazonian spaces. The research’s significance lies in challenging dominant interpretations of Amazonian history, fostering studies on diversity, contributions, and identities through the symbolic expressions and narratives of the arigo population, while bridging geographically distant yet historically connected regions. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative, analytical, and descriptive approaches, grounded in Bhabha (1998) and Hall’s (2005) theories, digitized documents from the Biblioteca Nacional, and physical archives. Findings suggest that despite existing scholarship, ideological and cultural tools persist in reinforcing historical traditionalism, marginalizing the pluralities that define Amazonian histories.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This study considers the dialogue between History and Urban Archaeology in the landscape, social and cultural transformations of the city of Porto Velho, Rondonia. The research examines, in the process of urban growth, the territory relegated to the Building Heritage, starting from three exemplary cases: the Clock Building (former Administration of EFMM), the Cultural Market (former Municipal Market) and the building of the Seringalistas Cooperative, currently occupied by a clothing store. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the investigation is based on the theories of long temporal duration (Braudel), collective memory (Funari) and Landscape Archaeology, with the objective of understanding how the resignifications of these buildings reflect the historical dynamics of the city in the face of urban and cultural transformations. The study highlights the interaction between inhabitants, spaces and economic practices in the transformation of the urban landscape, addressing the way in which memory, culture and identity are resignified and incorporated into the process. The buildings analyzed demonstrate the conflict between the need for preservation and the erasure of heritage meanings, revealing challenges in the context of urban growth and in the relationship between the population and cultural and historical values. However, they also have potential for cultural recovery and integration into collective memory, reinforcing their relevance as historical testimonies and elements that form a local social identity.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss topics that are addressed by History, such as the concept of memory, History Teaching, historical culture, and Ancient History. This research comes from an approach in Cultural History based on decolonial historiographical debates. The research sources will be the archaeological collection and other documents available at the Guajara-Mirim Museum, more precisely about the ancient History that is not disseminated in the city's public schools. It is possible to observe that the State of Rondonia greatly boasts an official History, a history from the colonizer's point of view. Given the lack of knowledge of this Amazonian past of cultural and archaeological diversity, we perceive a certain narrative discourse of denial of the most remote indigenous History, there are prejudices, stigmas, “erasures” of History, devalued sources and at the same time there is an overvaluation of a History of the State from the 20th century onwards, of the Madeira Mamore Railroad in Guajara-Mirim, as if there was no History prior to the contemporary period. In this Project, the concepts of Archaeology will contribute to the deconstruction of these denials and to valuing the most remote past of Guajara-Mirim. Thus, this Project is open to historiographical debate, based on the dialogue of Archaeology, the concept of memory, Historical Culture and an ancient History of the city of Guajara-Mirim, with a decolonial approach. Based on the proposal of cultural studies, we will research unwritten documents present in the collection to dialogue with the National Common Curricular Base and the Curricular Reference of the State of Rondonia with the purpose of proposing teaching material that values the archaeological collection of the Guajara-Mirim Museum.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This present work investigates, through ghost stories, the symbolic connections between memory, fear, and urban space in three historical buildings in the city of Porto Velho: the Palacio Presidente Vargas (now the Museu da Memoria Rondoniense), the building of the Rectory of the Federal University of Rondonia (formerly the Porto Velho Hotel), and the Mercado Cultural (formerly the Municipal Market). Based on the hypothesis that these stories, often treated as folklore, carry layers of collective memory and resistance, the research analyzes how they emerge among civil servants and visitors to these places, revealing hidden meanings and symbolic disputes. Drawing on the theoretical framework of the New Cultural History, the study emphasizes themes such as imagination, memory, and heritage, in dialogue with authors such as Jose D’ Assuncao Barros (2004, 2011, 2012), Michel de Certeau (1994), Sandra Pesavento (2006, 2008, 2012), Tim Edensor (2005), Jean Delumeau (1990) and Yi-Fu Tuan (2005, 2015). The interviews conducted throughout the research, treated here as oral sources, were fundamental to understanding how fear, silence, and forgetting relate to the ways in which people experience these buildings in their daily lives. In conclusion, ghost stories, far from being mere legends, function as tools for interpreting the city’s past and present, shaping how Porto Velho acknowledges, or silences, its own memories.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The present study aims to investigate gender performativity within the context of female teaching activity in Porto Velho (RO), examining how the gender norms imposed by society influences and regulates the practices of female teachers in the public education system. To achieve this objective, the research was structured into four complementary sections. The first section offers a brief historical overview of the city of Porto Velho, located in the Amazon region of Brazil, and introduces the four schools—understood here as disciplinary institutions that reproduce and reinforce social expectations, particularly those related to the construction of femininity (Foucault, 1975)—where the participating teachers work. The second section develops the theoretical framework, grounded in the concept of gender performativity formulated by Judith Butler, whose reflections challenge the supposed naturalness of gender and propose its understanding as the result of the repetition of normative acts and discourses (Butler, 2018). This theoretical perspective is articulated with Michel Foucault’s formulations on disciplinary power (1975), allowing for an analysis of how female teachers are affected by such mechanisms and how they understand—and at times resist—these processes of normalization, which generally operate unconsciously. The third section addresses the methodological approach adopted in the research, based on Oral History, conceived as both an art of listening and a method of knowledge production. In this section, it is discussed to what extent Oral History constitutes not merely a technique for data collection but also an interpretive approach that values the experience and memory of the subjects (Portelli, 2016; Alberti, 2004). Finally, the fourth and last section is dedicated to the analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with four teachers working in schools located in different regions of Porto Velho—central, eastern, northern, and southern zones. This stage seeks to understand the social, economic, and cultural differences that shape the trajectories of these teachers and, above all, how they experience, interpret, and confront the dynamics of gender performativity in their professional and social lives.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Based on a reflection on the issue of the challenge of homosexuality in the Vila de Betania Indigenous Community, this work seeks to show the many moral information of the Ticuna people in relation to this problem. From this perspective, I present dialogues with the community's residents, who state that the community does not understand this practice, due to lack of knowledge and the enormous influence of the community's religion. The objective of this study is to show the theme of homosexuality based on the experience of some Ticuna and relate it to the environment, politics, religion, gender relations and culture. Thus, understanding these experiences within the community, we see that Ticuna homosexuals suffer prejudice, both within their own families and from the residents. • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The objective of this proposal is to investigate the qualification of the process of sociability that promotes Rondonian Masonry, taking as an empirical cut the social profile of its maximum leaders at the state level, namely its grand masters, as well as its deputies. Generally speaking, it is claimed that Masonry is politically influential in numerous countries. In spite of the need for greater consideration of this perception, since one cannot automatically transfer from the political influence of many Freemasons as citizens to the influence of the Masonic Order, there is no doubt that it has effectively participated, as a politically influential institution, in various moments of our History. However, as a superficial reading indicates, this influence has declined in the political sphere over time, leaving the institution influential at the social level. The object of the research is to contribute to an analysis of the penetration of Masonry in the various social segments of the state and how this insertion draws its social profile. If Grand Masters are elected for their leadership in Masonry, that leadership must be the result of some form of social or political prestige external to the order, some prestige derived from the leader's own activity within the Order, or a combination of both. The combination of these elements is not simple. Take the case of the senator for Roraima, Mozarildo Cavalcante. Holder of the mandate of senator of the Republic, he was a candidate for Grand Master General of the Grand Orient of Brazil, one of the Brazilian Masonic powers of national scope. He has run four times for the grand master's degree of the order since 1993, and has lost all four elections, despite being an active Freemason and holding positions within the order and holding positions of power in society. Thus, if in the past the general leadership of Brazilian Masonry was handed over to men of great political or social prestige, such as José Bonifácio de Andrada, D. Pedro II and Luiz Alves de Lima e Silva, over time, and with the fall of the political influence of the order, the cabal for the choice of its grand masters became more complex. The history of Masonry in Rondonian soil is confused even with the initial years of existence of the city of Porto Velho. To read these transformations, it is necessary to consult bibliographies that recorded the empirical processes of constitution of order in this part of the Amazon, a period in which almost everything was yet to be built along the lines of what is called the pioneer front and, later, the expansion front. Finally, free masons from almost all regions of Brazil actively participated in the political life of this part of the Amazon region.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation seeks to explore and reveal the city of Porto Velho through photography. The focus of the investigation is on the period between the 1940s and 1950s, in the context of the 20th century, when the center of attention was occupied by photographic records. These years are of great importance for the history of the state of Rondônia as a whole, as they witnessed important events that shaped its trajectory. The research aims to draw a comprehensive overview of the main political and economic events that contributed to the historical construction of Porto Velho, capital of the State of Rondônia. Such events include important milestones, such as the creation of the Federal Territory of Guaporé, which later became the Federal Territory of Rondônia, and the second rubber economic cycle in the Amazon region. A particularly notable moment is the visit of then president Getúlio Vargas to the city, which was marked by a significant routine of photographic records. The study approaches photography as a valuable source of research for historians, supporting its potential to uncover social and symbolic aspects through, above all, the architectural marks that persist in the urban landscape of Porto Velho. In this way, this work aims to shed light on the rich history of Porto Velho, revealing the complex layers of meaning that can be extracted from photographic images of the time. At the same time, it is hoped to contribute to a deeper and enriching understanding of the evolution of this city throughout the 20th century.

  • This research aims to investigate symbolic representations, identities and cultural boundaries in indigenous history on the upper Madeira River through the analysis of iconography in archaeological ceramics classified as Pocó-Açutuba, Barrancoid and Amazonian Polychrome, of the archaeological sites Santa Paula, Veneza and Ilha de Santo Antônio. The plastic and painting techniques are analyzed in order to identify the graphics present in these ceramic assemblages. The artifacts found at these sites date from between 3200 and 420 AP: The Pocó-Açutuba Tradition, the oldest, and the Barrancoid Regional Style, both associated with peoples of the Arawak cultural matrix; and the Amazonian Polychrome Tradition, associated with Tupi peoples. We questioned which graphics were elaborated on the ceramics, their variations in space and over time, as well as which symbolic representations were present, focusing on the peoples of the Arawak cultural matrix. In order to achieve the research proposal, we contextualized studies on the Arawak and Tupi in the area covered by the study; then, using samples of Pocó-Açutuba, Barrancoide and Polychrome ceramics, an analysis was carried out of the designs present on the larger fragments, in which it was possible to identify the motifs; last but not least, we discuss the interpretation of the typologies in order to elucidate the recurrences and specificities present in the sites studied.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Porto Rolim de Moura do Guaporé, is located on the Mequéns River and is a district belonging to the municipality of Alta Floresta D´Oeste, located in the interior of the State of Rondônia. The formation and history of this space was due to processes of colonization of the Amazon that brought together different ethnic groups, indigenous people, quilombolas, rubber tappers, Bolivians, settlers and squatters. Indigenous and non-indigenous people live in the locality, living and coexisting in the same territory, subject to intense territorial disputes. This multi-ethnic coexistence is extremely conflictual. The indigenous peoples of the Wajuru ethnic group face an intense struggle in this space for environmental protection, for the preservation of their historical cultural heritage and demarcation of their territory, which is an ancient demand, historically built through the militancy and political protagonism of the indigenous peoples who live there, since they have always lived under the threat of losing their territory. We will deal with the topic from a present-day historical perspective, whose main interest is to report the situation experienced by the Wajuru people in the face of constant threats of invasion of their lands and the surrounding conflicts.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This research proposes to share an ethnographic study on the historical-cultural heritage of Wajuru indigenous people and quilombolas present in Rolim de Moura do Guaporé (RO). Our aim is to understand the historical processes of occupation of the Guaporé Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries that brought together Wajuru and Quilombola indigenous peoples, who contributed to the formation of a multicultural and pluriethnic territory in the Guaporean Amazon. In this way, the social historical processes are crucial for the composition of the history of these peoples, as well as the study of existing cultures and sociocultural dynamics, their experiences that allow cultural loans, in order to understand the conceptions of cultures as a historical repertoire, identity affirmation , memory and traditional knowledge. Composing this sociopolitical and economic research context, we seek to understand the conception of cultural heritage beyond the colonialist concept, where social groups, the focus of our research, are ignored, considered as non-existent heritage and that have nothing to safeguard, since who are on the margins of the hegemonic society. The historical heritage of Wajuru and Quilombola indigenous peoples make up the systems of signs, symbols that intertwine and that also present particularities in a way that significantly cooperate with the rich cultural diversity of Rondônia and that will be registered in this work.

  • This dissertation presents a study about illicit markets impacts on the culture and social structure of the Kaxarari people, located on the States of Rondonia, Acre and Amazonas border, from the perspective of sustainability and economy. The research central objective to analyze the conditions that encourage the grooming of indigenous people and the practice of environmental crimes that fuel the illicit market, as well as their influence on the culture and social structure of the aforementioned indigenous community, in the period between 2010-2020. The aim was to map the reality experienced by this ethnic group, regarding to the survey of the main illicit markets and the way in which such markets impact the culture and life dynamics of the Kaxarari people. Another important aspect discussed are the protective actions offered by the State to combat violence against these original peoples, given that this is a determination guaranteed by law. This is an investigation with a qualitative approach, supported by the theoretical assumptions of exploratory research, with data collection carried out through semi-structured interviews, documentary analysis and analysis of facts and phenomena that make up the object of study. Important theorists support this discussion, among which the following stand out: Aron (1997), Baniwa (2015), Bourdieu (1989), Foucault (1999; 2014), Silva (2015), Quijano (2009), Cunha (1992) e Aguiar (2018) e Bardin (2011). The Coordinator of Indigenous School Education of the Regional Education Coordination of the District of Extrema and the Superintendent of the Federal Police in the State of Rondonia contributed as sources for the interviews. The analysis of the collected information was developed using Content Analysis (Bardin, 2011). As a result, it was demonstrated that in the last decade, occurrences of violence and illegal acts against the Kaxararis have been increasing, with emphasis on illegal logging, expropriation of the territory by criminal farmers, death threats and grooming of indigenous people, from different perspectives. In the social structure, aspects about youth and indigenous school education were highlighted in the analysis of the interviews, highlighting in this context the absence of an intercultural educational proposal and the uncertainties regarding identity and culture.

  • The research in question deals with the incarceration of women based on the Criminal Information Report. The objective is to analyze the profile of the female population deprived of liberty in the state of Rondonia. Documentary study (GIL, 2002) carried out in the Criminal Information Report - RELIPEN 1st semester of 2023. The theoretical contributions of Perrot (2007) women; Foucault (1987) when addressing the historical context of sentences and prisons over time; Hermann (2018), Monastero (2017) who discuss female incarceration in the country were important so that the study could be discussed, the current legislation (BRASIL, 1984, 1988, 2016) also endorsed the discussion proposed in the objective. Analysis of the document allows us to affirm that women deprived of liberty in the state of Rondonia are marked by a lack of education, have children, do not receive visits from their families, and consider themselves brown. Replicating the national context in parts. Policies that are ineffective and lack continuity contribute to population growth. The State's failure to assume responsibility and carry out policies that actually aim to change the lives of women deprived of their liberty. To this end, it is necessary to consolidate policies that precede female incarceration, giving them different opportunities to pursue.

  • This dissertation addresses the Recent Colonization of Rondonia between the years 1970 and 1990, exploring the integration of the Amazon into the Brazilian center-south. Using Decolonial Theory, it analyzes the role of INCRA and capitalist dynamics, highlighting social, economic, political, and cultural aspects faced by migrants attracted by the idea of State Development and traditional populations that came into collision with Colonization. The research aims to contribute to the debate, considering the relationship between development policies and the Coloniality of Power. The methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, prioritizing local sources, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of "development" on traditional peoples. The structure of the work comprises three chapters, each addressing specific aspects of the recent colonization process of Rondonia. The results obtained, albeit partial in nature, provide a critical analysis of the relationships between the Amazon, Development, and the Coloniality of Power. By delving into the intricate layers of these phenomena, we aim to offer a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the dynamics that have shaped and continue to shape the reality of this region, with the hope of contributing to further reflections on the debate we propose here.

  • This research in question aims to present the trajectory of citizens called soldados da borracha (rubber soldiers) as war fighters from enlistment to tragic social oblivion, which persists to this day. The recruitment of these individuals was from 1942 to 1945. The importance of soldados da borracha to the war effort alongside the Allies is comparable to the soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who went to fight in Italian territory. Not only the Getulista government - which broke several promises made to soldiers who fought in the Amazon rainforest - but also Brazilian society itself forgot and did not give due value to the rubber heroes, whose efforts kept the Allied war machines running until total victory.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • During the Military Regime, especially from the 1970s onward, indigenous peoples, particularly those from the Amazon, faced numerous illegal complications, such as land invasions, land grabbing, expulsions, and massacres, the consequences of which persist to this day. During this same decade, the actions and attitudes of the Apurina stood out socially, as they became protagonists in the fight for rights, especially in securing their lands. From this perspective, the research analyzes the conflicts and resistances of the Apurina in the process of demarcating the indigenous lands of Km 45, Km 124, and Camicua in Boca do Acre, Amazonas, from 1978 to 1990. To meet this demand, a bibliographic review of academic productions about the Apurina is conducted. In addition, the Apurina's confrontation against land grabbing and the authoritarian practices of land grabbers, farmers, and politicians is addressed. Finally, a mapping of the territorial demarcation processes of the Apurina in Boca do Acre is carried out, providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and achievements of this indigenous group during this period. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative approach is proposed, utilizing a wide range of sources to provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon analyzed. The sources include documents produced by governmental agencies such as FUNAI, AJACRE, and INCRA, as well as records from non-governmental agencies, such as CIMI data (reports and periodicals), and information from regional and national alternative newspapers. This study also proposes the application of Content Analysis for handling the information contained in the sources used. Thus, through this research, it is aimed to highlight the protagonism of the Apurina in the process of demarcating their lands. Additionally, it is believed that the results obtained may highlight the presence of the authoritarian apparatus of the military regime, as well as the actions of the opponents of the Apurina cause, who used political power to perpetrate illegal acts, such as the invasion of indigenous lands.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • Between 1819 and 1820, renowned naturalists Johann von Spix and Carl von Martius embarked on an expedition through the vast captaincy of Rio Negro. During this journey, in addition to detailed observations of the rich fauna, flora and geography of the region, the Germanic duo also dedicated themselves to recording the intricate cultural aspects of the different indigenous groups they encountered along the way. Among these cultural aspects, mortuary practices stand out, which were meticulously documented by explorers in relation to ten native peoples, who differed mainly due to their linguistic affiliation. The reports produced by travelers’ highlighted peculiarities and significant variations between mortuary practices, both between groups belonging to the same linguistic family and among those who did not share such linguistic affinity. The analysis of these accounts not only presents a detailed understanding of the rites of passage of these indigenous communities, but also provides valuable insights into the cultural complexities and diversities present in the Rio Negro region during the 19th century. In addition to describing these mortuary rituals, this study also seeks to contextualize them within the broader framework of intercultural relations and power dynamics of the time. It is important to consider how travelers' notes may have inadvertently influenced the process of concealment or subordination of the indigenous "Other" as conceptualized by modern decolonial scholars. By critically examining these historical records, we can glimpse not only the cultural richness of the indigenous peoples of the Rio Negro, but also the ways in which the Eurocentric gaze can distort or obscure their practices and traditions.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The text presents a research proposal aimed at uncovering the social history of women who contributed to the construction and maintenance of the state of Rondonia, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the writing of this history. The research is driven by the following question: How has the historical trajectory of women in Rondonia taken shape, based on their roles, actions, and significant contributions through practices between the 1970s and 1990s? Although traces in history indicate that women were always present, they were relegated to the background, their contributions often limited to memory and excluded from the formal elucidation of the state’s history. This research is empirical in nature. Its first phase involves documentary research, which includes a study of theorists and literature on gender relations and the historical construction of the state of Rondonia. For data analysis, narratives will be collected, using Oral History methods. The presentation of results will be based on the argumentation techniques of the New Rhetoric by Perelman and Tyteca (2005). The results of interviews with pioneering women in Rondonia are presented and discussed in light of previous studies on the topic. The goal was to analyze these women’s narratives regarding their roles in the historical, social, and cultural development of the state. The interviews used biographical methods and were analyzed to identify key themes related to women’s contributions in the region. Selected dialogues represent the primary arguments extracted from the interviews. These narratives highlight the migration of these women to Rondonia in search of better opportunities, often accompanying their husbands. They faced challenges such as lack of infrastructure, precarious working conditions, and the need to balance domestic and professional responsibilities. Despite these adversities, the interviewees demonstrated resilience and creativity, adapting and contributing significantly to their communities. The experiences of these women underscore the importance of family relations and aspirations for a better life in their decision to migrate. The narratives of these pioneering women in Rondonia emphasize their resilience and contributions in health, education, and leadership. They overcame challenges and paved the way for future generations. Their stories enrich historical understanding and celebrate the diversity of experiences.

  • This work proposes a reflection on the actions of the District of Santo Antonio on the rubber plantations of the Madeira River, through the analysis of processes dating from 1912 to 1918. Using historiographical and journalistic sources and official reports, we will investigate the presence or absence of the State in rubber production areas. Just like, through Foucauldian understanding, how power relations occurred, with the arrival of a State institution, in environments dominated by rubber barons, as well as the Madeira River valley. We will question to what extent these different authorities collaborated or disputed dominance; and if with the decline of the rubber economy, rubber growers became more susceptible to renouncing privileges. To this end, we will introduce the research by pointing out theoretical-methodological issues that guided this production. Then, as an initial part of contextualization, we will describe the First Rubber Boom focusing on the violent ties created by the debt-bondage between rubber tappers and rubber barons. Soon after, we will present Santo Antonio and its strict relationship with the rubber economy; In addition, we will discuss the concepts of State and power, to then talk about the arrival of the District, its actions, and the working conditions of the police force in the region. Finally, we will directly analyze the processes of the Judicial District.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This dissertation examines the significant influence of the press in the formation of the Federal Territory of Guapore, now known as the State of Rondonia, during the administration of Getulio Vargas. Initially part of the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso, the region underwent profound transformations during the peak of natural rubber production in Brazil. Landmark initiatives, such as the construction of the Madeira-Mamore Railway and the establishment of telegraphic lines connecting Mato Grosso to Amazonas, catalyzed migration and settlement, fostering the emergence of journalistic activity. This initial momentum, occurring at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, was later disrupted by the economic decline of the rubber sector. The sector’s revitalization materialized only during World War II, a period marked by the creation of the Federal Territory of Guapore by Vargas in 1943, alongside significant social and political changes in which the local press played a pivotal mediating role. Regarding regional journalism, early efforts focused on publishing English-language periodicals catering to foreign railway workers, ultimately leading to various initiatives to establish local newspapers. Among these, the Alto Madeira, founded in 1917, emerged as the most prominent communication vehicle during the study's timeframe, spanning the 1930s to the 1950s. Although Alto Madeira has been recognized as a source in several historical investigations about Rondonia or Porto Velho, there is a noticeable gap in research treating it as the central subject of study. This research aims to analyze the role played by the Alto Madeira, particularly its involvement in key events of the time, its elevation of Colonel Aluizio Ferreira, and its interaction with the censorship mechanisms of the Estado Novo regime. By aligning itself with the central government’s actions, the newspaper supported political and administrative transformations in the region. Acting as a spokesperson for central authorities and aligning with dominant political and business classes, particularly rubber barons with commercial interests in the rubber trade, the newspaper functioned as a "party" in Gramscian terms. Methodologically, this study adopts a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, supported by an extensive bibliographic review encompassing both primary and secondary sources. This approach facilitated a nuanced understanding of the interactions between the press, political power, and prevailing social transformations. Critical analysis of articles and editorials from the newspaper enabled an assessment of media influences on local politics and social dynamics in Rondonia. The examination of Alto Madeira’s content underscored its historical significance, fostering a deeper reflection on power relations and the sociopolitical contexts in which journalism operated. This analysis identified patterns and trends that enhance the understanding of the relationships among media, society, and power. Such an approach may inspire further investigations on the subject, positioning journalism as an essential tool for studying history and comprehending past events while promoting a critical perspective on contemporary realities. Thus, this study contributes to the broader debate on the role of the press within Rondonia’s sociopolitical context, highlighting its function as both a mediator and an active participant in shaping historical narratives and societal developments. Methodologically, the research was conducted from a qualitative and exploratory-descriptive perspective, through an extensive bibliographical review that included both primary and secondary sources, allowing for a deep understanding of the interactions between the press, political power, and ongoing social transformations. Critical analysis of newspaper articles and editorials enabled an assessment of media influences on local policies and the social dynamics of Rondonia. The examination of content produced by Alto Madeira highlighted its historical importance, facilitating a reflection on power relations and the sociopolitical contexts in which journalism is embedded, aiding in identifying patterns and trends that enhance the understanding of the relationships between media, society, and power. This approach can encourage deeper investigations into the theme, positioning journalism as an essential tool for studying history and understanding past events, fostering a critical view of reality. Thus, the study contributes to the debate on the role of the press in the sociopolitical context of Rondonia.

  • This research is a contribution to studies on gold mining in the Amazon. The research proposed to reflect, through an ethnography, on the gold miner experiences on the Madeira River in the city of Porto Velho-RO. Through everyday experiences in mining on the Madeira River, I tried to give voice to social subjects, the gold miners operators and their ways of life, their fears, their tactics and strategies, what allowed me a greater understanding of the diversity of researched questions. First, I started with the reconstruction of the mining landscape in the Amazon past, verifying how it was and how it worked. The theoretical framework used for the development of the work came from authors who developed studies on gold mining in the Amazon. The methodologies used were bibliographic research and field research through participant observation. The study site was the Simãozinho gold mine. The timeline of the study ranged from the late 1970s to the present day. The results indicate that mining on the Madeira River has always been in constant transformations what affect the subjects involved in the mining and also their social place, in mining all social, economic, political and environmental limits are intertwined. The geographical boundaries established by legislation are mere legal formulations that involve complex discussions, in which more or less antagonistic groups, for or against mining on the Madeira River, try to make their interests prevail.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The present study sought to understand the museums function in society and the participation of museum institutions in the North Region in the Brazilian Amazonian societies’ construction of identities, memories and cultural forgetfulness processes. To this end, the cultural and identity elements of the North Region museums collections and their singularities were analyzed, also developing a specific study on the Research Center and Regional Museum of Archeology of Rondônia (CPMRARO) performance, in Presidente Médici-RO, in the mediciense society cultural formation and the local public perception in relation to the museum.
Amidst the complexity occurred in the Amazonian territorial space occupation, also emerged identity disputes and power relations: some stories were highlighted while others were silenced. As social spaces and guardians of memories, museums also participate in these societies construction, reflecting their social and cultural dynamics. The study points out that museums are in constant transformation and resignification of their technical and social role, no longer concerned only with their collection, but also with the communities and locations in which they are inserted, becoming democratic, participatory and humanized spaces. In the North Region, museums have been contributing to rescue, safeguard and give visibility to the Amazonian societies memory, history and culture, especially the traditional populations that inhabit the region. Although they represent only 4% of the museums total number in the country, the North Region museums have greater emphasis on preserving traditional populations cultural elements. As peculiarities of the North Region museums, the thematic approach and space stand out, which ensure the studies and preservation of the predominant themes in their collections of History, Anthropology, Archeology and Exact, Earth, Biology and Health Sciences. CPMRARO emerged to give visibility to the Amazonian man, contributing so that his histories, memories and cultural productions are recognized and preserved. Despite the undeniable museums importance in society, mapping the North Region museums current situation shows that these institutions have been facing several difficulties in guaranteeing a minimum standard of museological management. The lack of qualified professionals and thre need of patrimonial education actions by CPMRARO can impact the identity links of the Medici population with indigenous archaeological remains, since portion of this population does not recognize these ethnic groups as their predecessors.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • This work aims to analyze the works Barracão (1959) and Uma Grande Mancha de Sol (1951), both from the initial phase of the production of the author from Pará, Sultana Levy Rosenblatt, focusing on the construction of memory and identity marks in the Jewish immigration processes in the Amazon region. The research starts from the hypothesis that the joint reading of the two works opens up possibilities for understanding not only the literature produced by the Author, but also her contribution to Amazonian history, by reassembling spaces and customs in the north of the country, at a time when little was said about this region. The process of remembrance and writing also serves to present the characteristics, language and spaces present between the 1930s and 1940s, in addition, we propose a discussion about Judaism and its immigration process to the northern region, analyzing how this population was received and how it develops its life stories from this new scenario. To this end, an interdisciplinary dialogue was carried out between the novels and historical records. This research resorted to critical studies of theorists of history such as Pesavento (2013); Chartier (2009); Benchimol (2008), Tocantins (1976), and, for the analysis of the works, we used literary criticism with Cândido (2006); Ricouer (2007) and Sarlo (2007) among others.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The most remote past of humanity can be analyzed from multiple perspectives, depending on which science the dialogue is being constructed, so this dissertation will be analyzed from the perspective of archeology in conjunction with history. The objective of this work is to discuss the approaches and themes sensitive to archeology presented in the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) of History for the final years of Elementary School (6th to 9th grade) proposing ways of using the materiality of the Technical Reserve of Archeology of UNIR (RTDARQ) as a link between formal education and archaeology. For this, Funari's theoretical contribution was used to discuss Public Archeology and Heritage Education as methodologies to bring formal education closer to archaeological knowledge, through interdisciplinary activities in schools, visits to archaeological sites, as well as visits to the physical collection of RTDARQ. In addition to the perspective of History Teaching present in the works of Circe Bittencourt, in addition to the theoretical contribution on education present in Libâneo. It was then observed that the BNCC distances itself from the direct approach to archaeological themes. The term “archaeology” and the like does not appear directly in the curriculum, featuring an explicit setback for these issues, leaving it up to the editors of didactic materials to discuss these matters indirectly in the skills of the Base. Amazonian Archeology is still treated superficially in textbooks, taking into account that there is no skill that focuses on talking about the past of indigenous societies in the Amazon, taking into account the most varied characteristics that contemplate them.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The object of this dissertation is to study the Brazilian Institute for Forestry Development (IBDF) in a historical context that covers the period during which the authority existed (1967-1989). Created during the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985), the IBDF's mission was to achieve contradictory objectives in the process of formulating Brazilian environmental policy, being responsible for the economic growth of the forestry sector while at the same time drawing up policies to protect fauna and flora. This clear contradiction in objectives was also responsible for the conflictual relationship between the different organized groups that made up and disputed the direction of the IBDF. Using Gramsci's understanding of the state, this research aimed to identify how the disputes between different actors, types of projects and conceptions of development, the forest and the Amazon met and unfolded throughout the existence of the municipality.

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The city of Porto Velho has already hosted the best Carnival in the northern region, with large parades of Samba Schools, in the 1970s to 1990s. Two of them, A Pobres do Caiari and Diplomatas do Samba, enchanted Carnivals for many years, through of a carnival dispute that went far beyond the Avenida, it was along the lines of a social, economic and even political dispute, within the working class itself, divided between the residents of the first planned neighborhood in Brazil, the Caiari neighborhood and the residents of neighborhoods originating from another formation process, without higher education and without high-ranking public service positions, belonging to Porto Velho, which remained outside the dividing line. This research has a qualitative approach (GASKELL, 2002), with semi-structured interviews (MANZINI, 2004) as a procedure for data collection, as well as the focus group, with real characters who lived and experienced this dispute between the two biggest carnival groups that the municipality had in the last decades of the 20th century. The research also includes several newspaper clippings from the period, which portrayed carnival disputes in Porto Velho, available at the Documentation Center of the State of Rondônia. For data analysis and formulation, we used Oral History (ALBERTI, 2005; SOUZA, 2005) and Discourse Analysis techniques (PIOVEZANI AND SARGENTINI, 2011), to construct data, based on the speeches of our interviewees. Discussing the concept of Popular Culture (BAKHTIN, 1987) and Carnival (SEBE, 1986) in the Amazon (BRAGA, 2009).

  • Resumen Espectáculo
  • The study had the general objective of analyzing Official Teaching documents, Ancient History and History Teaching from a decolonial perspective in comparison with teaching materials and projects developed by the Dom Bosco Municipal School in the city of Humaitá in the State of Amazonas. The Official Teaching Curriculum is a guide to be followed to carry out pedagogical actions in educational institutions, which is why it is important to research and study. We consider it to be of great relevance, as it is a topic that has already been debated in recent years, but which needs to be studied from a decolonial perspective. Based on this assumption, this research focused on the development of the Princesa do Madeira Project at that school. We will also use the textbook as one of the sources and establish its relationship with the Teaching of History, observing all the historical aspects contained in its content, the methodology, bibliographical references, theories, selected images and concepts used in the text about Ancient History. Based on this principle, we will then develop our work focusing on the theoretical discussion of “historical consciousness” by Jörn Rüsen proposed by Estevão Martins (2019) and Wilian Barom (2019), on the concept of “textbook” by Itamar Freitas (2019) and on the discussion historiography of Ancient History in Brazil proposed by Gilberto Francisco (2017) and Norberto Guarinello (2010), and finally, in the concept of Coloniality of power by Aníbal Quijano (2008). Our main question revolved around the issue of the possibility of thinking about an Ancient History of the Amazon or an Ancient History of Brazil based on the Princess of Madeira Project.
