SUMMARY:

The research seeks to understand the historical and political constitution of museums in Brazil, with a special focus on the North Region, to then verify the performance of these institutions in the participation in the construction of identities, memories and forgetfulness based on investigations about the cultural and identity elements represented in the museums. collections from museums in the North Region, with emphasis on the Research Center and Regional Museum of Archeology in Rondônia. Amid the complexity that occurred in the occupation of the Amazonian territorial space, identity disputes and power relations also emerged. Some stories were highlighted while others were silenced. Museums, being a social space and guardian of memories, the locus of stories and identities, also participate in the construction of these Amazonian societies, reflecting their social and cultural dynamics. To achieve this objective, in field research, a mapping of the profile of these museums and their performance with their public was built. The research also carries out a punctual study on the Research Center and Regional Museum of Archeology of Rondônia in Presidente Médici-RO and its local public, in order to understand the relationship of the museum with the public and the perception of this public in relation to the museum. The results of the research point out that despite a significant expansion in the creation of museums both in the country and in the North Region from the 1980s onwards, these institutions had their peak of growth only in the first decade of the 21st century, signaling a strong decrease from there. The research shows a close relationship between the predominant collections in the collections of museums in the North Region with the culture of local societies, in particular, traditional populations. In this context, the Research Center and Regional Museum of Archeology of Rondônia emerges to keep the memory and culture of small groups that were erased for a long time. However, the research identified that many of these museums face difficulties in guaranteeing their full functioning, both due to the lack of qualified professionals to work in related areas of the museum, as well as insufficient financial resources and inadequate physical structures.
