This research is a contribution to studies on gold mining in the Amazon. The research proposed to reflect, through an ethnography, on the gold miner experiences on the Madeira River in the city of Porto Velho-RO. Through everyday experiences in mining on the Madeira River, I tried to give voice to social subjects, the gold miners operators and their ways of life, their fears, their tactics and strategies, what allowed me a greater understanding of the diversity of researched questions. First, I started with the reconstruction of the mining landscape in the Amazon past, verifying how it was and how it worked. The theoretical framework used for the development of the work came from authors who developed studies on gold mining in the Amazon. The methodologies used were bibliographic research and field research through participant observation. The study site was the Simãozinho gold mine. The timeline of the study ranged from the late 1970s to the present day. The results indicate that mining on the Madeira River has always been in constant transformations what affect the subjects involved in the mining and also their social place, in mining all social, economic, political and environmental limits are intertwined. The geographical boundaries established by legislation are mere legal formulations that involve complex discussions, in which more or less antagonistic groups, for or against mining on the Madeira River, try to make their interests prevail.
