Identity, memory and resistance: the representation of museums in the North of Brazil, emphasizing the Research Center and Regional Archeology Museum of Rondônia (CPMRARO).
Museums. Cultural heritage. Memory and identity. Forgetfulness. Power and resistance.
The present study sought to understand the museums function in society and the participation of museum institutions in the North Region in the Brazilian Amazonian societies’ construction of identities, memories and cultural forgetfulness processes. To this end, the cultural and identity elements of the North Region museums collections and their singularities were analyzed, also developing a specific study on the Research Center and Regional Museum of Archeology of Rondônia (CPMRARO) performance, in Presidente Médici-RO, in the mediciense society cultural formation and the local public perception in relation to the museum.
Amidst the complexity occurred in the Amazonian territorial space occupation, also emerged identity disputes and power relations: some stories were highlighted while others were silenced. As social spaces and guardians of memories, museums also participate in these societies construction, reflecting their social and cultural dynamics. The study points out that museums are in constant transformation and resignification of their technical and social role, no longer concerned only with their collection, but also with the communities and locations in which they are inserted, becoming democratic, participatory and humanized spaces. In the North Region, museums have been contributing to rescue, safeguard and give visibility to the Amazonian societies memory, history and culture, especially the traditional populations that inhabit the region. Although they represent only 4% of the museums total number in the country, the North Region museums have greater emphasis on preserving traditional populations cultural elements. As peculiarities of the North Region museums, the thematic approach and space stand out, which ensure the studies and preservation of the predominant themes in their collections of History, Anthropology, Archeology and Exact, Earth, Biology and Health Sciences. CPMRARO emerged to give visibility to the Amazonian man, contributing so that his histories, memories and cultural productions are recognized and preserved. Despite the undeniable museums importance in society, mapping the North Region museums current situation shows that these institutions have been facing several difficulties in guaranteeing a minimum standard of museological management. The lack of qualified professionals and thre need of patrimonial education actions by CPMRARO can impact the identity links of the Medici population with indigenous archaeological remains, since portion of this population does not recognize these ethnic groups as their predecessors.
