THE CITY AS A TEXT: PORTO VELHO IN THE 40'S AND 50'S, THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Amazon, Porto Velho, Photography and Semiotics.

This dissertation seeks to present the city of Porto Velho as a text. A text that has its languages, forms and meanings. The city of Porto Velho in the 40's and 50's being the center in the discoveries of these languages. Periods that have significant features for the history of the state of Rondônia as a whole. In this route, the work aims to go through the main events that were part of the historical construction of the state capital. Events such as the creation of the Federal Territory of Guaporé, the Federal Territory of Rondônia, the second economic cycle of Amazonian rubber, and the visit of President Getúlio Vargas to the city. Thus, Porto Velho becomes the center, where the mentioned periods become the focus of the developed research. In addition, in this context, there is an attempt to analyze the city of Porto Velho in the 40s and 50s through photography with semiotic analysis, photography as a source of research for the historian, its social uses and its symbologies in architectural marks of the Porto city.
