JUSTICE AND THE STATE IN THE SERINGALS OF THE MADEIRA RIVER DURING THE DECLINE OF THE FIRST GUMMY OUTBREAK (1912-1918)
Keywords: First Rubber Boom; State, power, justice, District of Santo Antônio.
This work proposes a reflection on the actions of the District of Santo Antônio on the rubber plantations of the Madeira River, through the analysis of processes dating from 1912 to 1918. Using historiographical and journalistic sources and official reports, we will investigate the presence or absence of the State in rubber production areas. Just like, through Foucauldian understanding, how power relations occurred, with the arrival of a State institution, in environments dominated by rubber barons, as well as the Madeira River valley. We will question to what extent these different authorities collaborated or disputed dominance; and if with the decline of the rubber economy, rubber growers became more susceptible to renouncing privileges. To this end, we will introduce the research by pointing out theoretical-methodological issues that guided this production. Then, as an initial part of contextualization, we will describe the First Rubber Boom focusing on the violent ties created by the debt-bondage between rubber tappers and rubber barons. Soon after, we will present Santo Antônio and its strict relationship with the rubber economy; In addition, we will discuss the concepts of State and power, to then talk about the arrival of the District, its actions, and the working conditions of the police force in the region. Finally, we will directly analyze the processes of the Judicial District.
