BETWEEN CUTUBAS AND PELES CURTAS” POWER AND CONFLICT BETWEEN THE ELITES IN THE FEDERAL TERRITORY OF GUAPORÉ/RONDÔNIA (1943 – 1964)
CUTUBAS, PELES CURTAS, GUAPORÉ, RONDÔNIA, POLITICS, AMAZÔNIA
In the recently created Federal Territory of Guaporé, whose electoral colleges were limited to Porto Velho and Guajará-Mirim, disputes for political power and, consequently, control of the state administrative and bureaucratic apparatus, through the occupation of public positions and functions , divided the local elite. Some positioned themselves alongside Aluízio Ferreira and others were supporters of Joaquim Vicente Rondon. Over time, other subjects were involved in the dispute and, consequently, the differences and conflicts in the political environment reached the most popular layers of society with greater intensity, being divided between cutubas and peles curtas. We can say that it all started with the inauguration of Aluízio Ferreira as the first governor of the Territory, in 1943, and ended after the civil-military coup of 1964, with the increase in persecution of regionalized political and social movements. The newspapers of the time, especially Alto Madeira and Guaporé, old and recent works recorded this period and the trajectory of the social agents involved in the dispute for local power. However, sources from the judiciary (criminal proceedings, criminal complaints, investigations) of an unprecedented nature, will compose, together with newspapers, the set of sources to be used to analyze the complexity of this regional historical moment marked by conflicts between different members of the elite. location.
