A study on attitudes towards mathematics of students in transition stages of basic education at a state school in Ji-Paraná-RO

Understanding students' attitudes towards mathematics and the factors involved in their development is of paramount importance, because when considering that negative attitudes towards mathematics can contribute to students becoming aversive to mathematics, producing internal consequences (failure, age-grade distortion and dropout) and external (unemployment rates and low wages) to the school environment, it is essential to reflect on the contribution of attitudinal aspects to the teaching and learning process of mathematics and also to society, especially in years in which there is a transition from stages of basic education in which the student experiences many changes, both at school and personally. It should be noted that attitudes towards mathematics in the context of the transition of stages of education is a subject that has been little explored. Based on theoretical references and classroom experiences, the following research question was defined: What is the perception of students who have negative attitudes related to mathematics in a public school in the municipality of Ji-Paraná-RO regarding the factors that influence so that they are included in the context of aversion of the teaching-learning process of mathematics? In order to answer the proposed question, the present research aimed to understand the perception of students regarding the teaching-learning process of mathematics associated with negative attitudes towards the subject in a public school in the city of Ji-Paraná-RO. The research is configured by a mixed methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative research procedures in order to explore the information in detail. The respondents were 12 students, three from each year (5th, 6th and 9th year of EF and 1st year of EM) chosen among those who had the lowest scores in terms of answering the attitudes scale regarding applied mathematics in the first stage of the research. and mathematics teachers from a public school. The recording of information was organized in the following steps: application of a scale of attitudes towards mathematics; interview with the 12 students selected through the scores obtained on the attitudes scale; interviews with school mathematics teachers research and analysis of the mathematics performance of the students interviewed. As for the procedures of data analysis, for the organization, treatment and quantitative analysis (scale of attitudes) of the data, the use of techniques of statistical analysis of data was considered in order to verify the existence of relationships between the variables present in the sample, being used for its execution the software R and Excel. The analysis of qualitative data (interviews) was carried out through the descriptive analysis of the interviewees' speeches, as well as the articulation between the data collected from the other instruments used in this research. In the results found, it is noted that in the 5th year of Elementary School more positive attitudes related to mathematics are evidenced, and similar results were obtained in studies in the area such as, for example, those of Brito (1996) affirming the presence of positive attitudes in the first years of PE, and among the years surveyed, the highest rates of negative attitudes towards mathematics were evidenced in the 1st year of the EM. It is hoped that the present research can contribute to the understanding of the aspects involved in the development of negative attitudes related to mathematics, as it is known that these attitudes can influence student performance and consequently promote their insertion in contexts of school failure.
