SUMMARY:

This research seeks to investigate the knowledge and mathematical practices of the Paiter Suruí people and their intersections with the local culture present in the collection of babassu and in the artisanal processing of its by-products and the contributions of this type of research to the training of indigenous teachers who teach mathematics. The theme was chosen because it is an ancestral activity and the research is relevant to promote the use of babassu, highlighting traditional culture, sustainability, collecting babassu and artisanal processing of by-products (oil, mesocarp flour, coal, handicrafts, among others). In addition, it highlights the mathematical knowledge and practices of the Paiter Suruí people, giving new meaning to traditional educational practices and recalling the knowledge and practices of tradition and the processes of change that occurred after contact. The research was carried out in the Iratana village, located on line 10, km 60, in the Indigenous Land (TI) Sete de Setembro, municipality of Cacoal, Rondônia (RO). The research participants were village residents, over eighteen years old, who were available and interested in participating, in addition to indigenous teachers who teach mathematics and work in indigenous schools. To this end, we observe, listen and accompany the collection of babassu and the artisanal processing of by-products and identify Paiter Suruí knowledge and mathematical practices present in these activities. Subsequently, we reflected together with the indigenous teachers participating in the research, the potential of the research carried out for the training of indigenous teachers who teach mathematics. The study had a qualitative approach, of the autoethnographic type. The main theoretical basis of the research is formed by authors from the area of Mathematics Education, more specifically from Ethnomathematics, with emphasis on those who discuss the mathematical knowledge and practices of indigenous peoples and their intertwining with teacher training. The research is still in the execution phase, the data are being organized and still require analysis. We hope that the results will contribute to revitalize the traditional culture of the Paiter Suruí people and improve the training of indigenous teachers who teach mathematics.
