SAEB IN THE PERCEPTION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS AT STATE SCHOOLS IN ROLIM DE MOURA, RO

This research aims to understand the perceptions of Mathematics teachers from the 9th grade
of Elementary School and the 3rd grade of High School in public schools in Rolim de
Moura/RO, regarding the Basic Education Evaluation System (Saeb) and the repercussions
recognized in their practices. It is understood that external evaluations, such as Saeb, have
become essential tools for the management and improvement of teaching quality, allowing the
mapping of students’ competencies and the identification of educational challenges and
progress. However, it is also acknowledged that these evaluations do not always align with the
principles of a critical Mathematics Education, often leading to the adaptation of teaching
practices to evaluative criteria. Hence the importance of investigating Saeb from the perspective
of teachers who deal directly with schools and experience the impacts of this evaluation.
Considering perception as a multifaceted phenomenon, influenced by experiences, beliefs, and
conceptions about Mathematics Education, evaluation, and the teacher’s role, a qualitative field
research approach was adopted. The study was carried out in state schools in the municipality
of Rolim de Moura and involved three Mathematics teachers working in the 9th grade of
Elementary School and two teachers teaching in the 3rd grade of High School. For data
production, questionnaires, interviews, and field diary notes were used. Among the main results
observed so far are: the constant pressure for performance in external evaluations; changes in
school routines motivated by the pursuit of better results; curricular modifications aimed at
meeting the requirements of these evaluations; and the perception, on the part of teachers, that
their real needs are not properly considered or heard. The expected results aim to value teaching
practices, provide support for understanding the impacts of Saeb on professional practice, and
foster public policies that are aligned with an emancipatory education. Thus, the study
contributes to a deeper understanding of the local educational context, helping to identify
challenges and opportunities for improving the teaching of Mathematics.
