SUMMARY:

This study aims to conduct a historical survey of the agricultural practices that have contributed to the development of the municipality of Igarape-Miri, in the state of Para, Brazil. The research focuses on two key periods for the local economy: the sugarcane cycle, which was highly significant in the 19th century, and the acai agro-extractivism, which has become the region’s main economic source since the late 1990s. The analysis seeks to understand the historical contexts of each cycle, the social relations involved in the productive activities, as well as the current socioeconomic organization of the municipality. The adopted methodology is qualitative, based on documentary research (books, websites, digital magazines, and various documents), along with the application of serial history, which allows for the analysis of sequential events and their interrelations over time. A case study approach will also be used, enabling an in-depth analysis of the historical transformations related to local economic activities. Oral history, in turn, complements the approach by valuing the memories of the social actors involved in these processes. Ultimately, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Igarape-Miri has developed historically and how it is currently organized, highlighting not only the productive aspects but also the living conditions and experiences of the social actors who took part in the sugarcane and acai cycles.
