SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to contribute to regional studies on the press and urbanization of the Rondoniense Forest Zone (ZMR) and to encourage historiographical production concerning this city. It is an analysis of the urban narratives of Rolim de Moura, Rondônia, through the investigation of local newspapers and the relationships among the press, representations, and urban identities between 1995 and 2007. The social transformations and expectations of progress in Rondônia serve as the starting point for examining how the press contributed to consolidating narratives that were both favorable and contradictory to urbanization, reflecting the disputes among the multiple discourses circulating among the city’s inhabitants. The collection of newspapers, donated to the Regional Documentation Center of the Rondoniense Forest Zone (CDR), allows for inquiries into socio-spatial dynamics, including images, opinions, and controversies that illustrate the complexity of Rolim de Moura’s modernization process. The research is grounded in Roger Chartier’s theory of representation, recognizing that news does not merely reflect reality but also participates in its construction, influencing perceptions and local identities. Divided into three chapters, the study proposes a narrative that combines history, interpretive analysis, and reflection on the various social, political, cultural, and economic interests underlying the publications. Thus, it demonstrates that perspectives of progress, crisis, and resistance coexisted within the city, revealing the multifaceted nature of urbanization’s changes and continuities, as well as the importance of critical historiographical practices to understand the multiple voices and trajectories that shaped Rolim de Moura.
