SUMMARY:

This dissertation seeks to understand, through the subjective accounts of four women living in
Brazil’s Northern Region, the processes of aging from an intersectional perspective woven
through the understanding of aging, gender, territory, and photography, which were used as
the analytical categories. The path followed here is a cartographic journey; therefore, clues are
created to guide the reader in navigating the spaces that were explored in greater depth.
Drawing on a qualitative approach focused on examining intersectional elements, the study
understands gender as a social construct. Consequently, there is not a single understanding of
what it means to be a woman, but rather multiple forms of womanhood that inhabit this space.
Likewise, cartography permeates the entire narrative; thus, the researcher does not assume
merely a role of data collection, but also one of producing the data presented here. The
research was developed based on a socio-geographical framework. In this sense, the women
whose accounts form the basis of the study are all over 60 years of age, thereby contributing
perspectives on old age. Accordingly, the ways in which each participant understands her own
subjectivity and relates to the continuous passage of time were analyzed. The territory
investigated here is not limited to the geographical space inhabited by these women, but also
encompasses the construction of meaning through which this place permeates the corporeality
of each participant. To build this work, an imagetic perspective was also employed; that is, in
addition to the oral narratives that shape this knowledge, there are visual
narratives—photographs produced by the researcher—that map this aging process onto the
skin itself. The researcher-artist materializes the study through a multidisciplinary practice in
which art serves as a mode of knowledge production. In this regard, it was possible to
understand that although the participants recount their experiences while sharing the same
territory, there are singularities that belong to their individual subjectivities, as well as points
of convergence that contribute to the understanding of old age in Rondônia. In other words,
this research does not propose thinking about old age from an external perspective, but rather
from the ways in which aging in this place is shaped by lived experiences and affective
encounters.
