The Aedes aegypti is an arthropod vector of viruses such as Dengue, Zika,
Chikungunya, and Wild Yellow Fever. Only Dengue and Yellow Fever have a
vaccine as a preventive treatment, and the vector control still suppressing
arboviruses and preventing new epidemics. Therefore, discovering substances
and their applicability for vector control is a constant search. Given the above,
the objective of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of essential oil
and vegetable oil on different life stages of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti. The
Morinda citrifolia fruit’s essential oil (OE noni) and the Carapa guianensis seed’s
vegetable oil (OV andiroba) were used in ovicidal (20 eggs/treatment), larvicidal
and pupicidal (10 larvae - pupae/treatment) tests. The protocol used was based
on the World Health Organization. In tests with initial concentrations of 1000, 750,
500, 250, 125, 50, 25, 10, and 5 ppm, the control was distilled water and 100 μl
of ethyl alcohol, a final volume of 10 ml, and final concentrations based on activity
windows obtained. Each treatment had three replicates and was repeated three
times with different generations, and those tests were monitored for 24 to 72
hours. In adulticidal tests with the ingestion of a sugar solution and the oils OE
noni and OV andiroba, the initial concentrations were 3000, 2500, 2000, 1500,
1000, 500; 750, 250, and 125 ppm and negative group (sucrose + food coloring),
20 adult females were used, each treatment had three replicates and was
repeated twice with different generations, the tests were monitored for 24 to 72
hours. The obtained results were: (i) no ovicidal effect was observed for both oils,
(ii) the OE noni larvicidal effect showed LC50 (24 h) 90.1 ppm and LC90 (24
h)146.1 ppm; and OV andiroba LC50 (24 h) 646.7 ppm and LC90 (24 h) 3048.3
ppm; (iii) OE noni pupicidal effect showed LC50 341.05 and LC90 498.06; and
OV andiroba CL50 (24 h) 1029.9 and LC90 (24 h) 2275.1; and for both oils (OE
noni and OV andiroba) there was no adulticidal effect by ingestion, however, OE
noni presented a Knockdown effect due to the volatiles present in the OE.
Larvicidal and pupicidal effects of both oils were concluded, suggesting further
research on both oils with the application of nanotechnology and the repellent
effect of OE noni.
