Eichhornia crassipes; Pistia stratiotes; Salvinia spp; Preference
The genus Mansonia (Blanchard, 1901) has 25 species classified in the tribe
Mansoniini, divided into two subgenera: Mansonia (Mansonia) (with 15 species)
and Mansonia (Mansonioides) (with 10 species). Only Mansonia (Mansonia)
occurs in the neotropical region. During the oviposition process, eggs are
deposited under leaves used as substrate. Some studies have shown the
association of Mansonia species with aquatic macrophytes (Eichhornia crassipes
and Pistia stratiotes) in Asia and North America. However, controlled studies on
the oviposition preference of Mansonia in Brazil were not found. Therefore, this
study aimed to evaluate the Mansonia humeralis oviposition preference for
aquatic macrophytes in two experimental situations: (i) with and (ii) without
choice. For these experiments, Ma. Humeralis females were collected by
protected human attraction and placed in plastic cages, fed with human blood for
15 minutes in the field. After three days, post-blood meal, the females were
identified and placed inside bugdorm cages with rectangular plastic basins with
1.8 liters of filtered water for five days, containing the specific treatment
substrates, divided into two distinct groups. The no-choice group (NCG): (i) E.
crassipes plant; (ii) P. stratiotes plant; (iii) Salvinia auriculata and (iv) expanded
polystyrene (EPS) abiotic substrate. And the choice group (CG) composed of (v)
all plants + EPS (MIX). After this period, the oviposition substrates were inspected
to quantify postures and count the number of eggs. A total of 886 females were
used and 66 (7.46%) oviposition’s were recorded. The 66 oviposition’s recorded,
40 (60.6%) were in the NCG and 26 (39.4%) in the CG. Regardless of the
experimental group, no female oviposited in E. crassipes. In the NCG, 40
oviposition’s recorded: 50% of the females oviposed on S. auriculata, 35% on P.
stratiotes and only 15% on EPS, suggesting the females' preference for these
plants compared to the inert substrate (EPS). While in CG of the 26 oviposition’s
obtained: 42% were on S. auriculata, 34.6% on P. stratiotes and 23% on EPS,
with no differences in oviposition frequency between these substrates. The
results suggest that M. humeralis does not ovipose on E. crassipes but oviposits
more frequently on other plants in relation to EPS under the experimental
conditions used in the laboratory. A total of 6,054 eggs were found without
induction, showing no significant differences between the Salvinia and Pistia
plants and the abiotic substrate. 2,568 larvae were obtained from oviposition
without induction, there was no significant difference between the substrates on
which they were oviposed. Regarding larval preference, a significant difference
was noted in fixation on Pistia when compared to other substrates.
