RESUMO:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of riverine children and adolescents and to correlate them with the exposure of mercury contamination in two communities in the lower Madeira River (AM). It is a quantitative and descriptive study with a cross-sectional design in the communities of Puruzinho and São Sebastião do Tapuru. The sample consisted of individuals from zero to 19 years old (children and adolescents) and their mothers. Concentrations of total mercury (HgTotal) and MeHg in hair of all subjects and of HgTotal in mothers' blood were evaluated. For analysis of growth and weight gain, we measured the anthropometry (weight and height) of all individuals. In addition, a questionnaire was applied to identify dietary habits, socioenvironmental data. The results demonstrate that the mean concentrations of HgTotal in women's hair was higher in the community of Puruzinho 11.6 ± 5.0 mg.kg-1 and MeHg 8.7 ± 4.1 mg.kg-1, compared to women of Tapuru with HgTotal (7.0 ± 3.73 mg.kg-1) and MeHg (6.79 ± 3.4 mg.kg-1). The highest means for the age groups was observed in the age group 0-5 years in the Puruzinho with HgTotal (9.14 ± 3.44 mg.kg-1) MeHg (8.81 ± 4.08 mg.kg- 1). In the Tapuru, the mean age group was> 5-10 years old with HgTotal (7.76 ± 1.52 mg.kg-1), MeHg (7.17 ± 1.44 mg.kg-1). Although the frequency of weekly consumption of fish in the community of Tapuru is higher, 84.8% of the families reported consuming non-carnivorous fish, while 48.33% of the Puruzinho families consume preferentially carnivorous fish. The Puruzinho community also had higher blood HgTotal levels with 45 ug.L-1 compared to Tapuru with 30.11 ug.L-1. In the evaluation of time in the Puruzinho in the period 2012-2017, it was observed that there was no significant difference in the concentrations of HgTotal in the hair of the population for adults, children and adolescents, however, the mean of the concentrations in the age group> 5-10 years presented a decrease of 57.84% in the evaluation of 2017 compared to 2012. Regarding the growth the community of Tapuru presented averages of z score HAZ in the age group of 0-5,> 5-10,> 10-19 (-0, 42; -0.16; -1.02), as well as BMI (0.75, -0.45, -0.22). In the Puruzinho HAZ (0.86; -0.68; -0.64), BMI (0.31; -0.25; -0.02) in the respective age groups. Most children and adolescents in both communities are eutrophic; however, in the Tapuru, some children from zero to five years are shorter and heavier, while individuals are> 5 to 10 years of age and underweight. Some of the adolescents are also below the reference standards. In the Puruzinho, only the age group of the adolescents presented a difference, being that they are below in the cutoff score -2. In the Tapuru there is a significant negative correlation, although weak, with R - 0.372 in relation to the HAZ score (height for age) with the concentration of mercury. But not necessarily out of the reference range.
