Keywords: preservation areas; degraded areas; environmental public policies
The study sought to understand the interaction between deforestation, water quality and urban planning in Porto Velho, with the aim of evaluating how these issues affect environmental sustainability and the formulation of public policies. Located in the Brazilian Amazon, Porto Velho faces significant environmental challenges, especially with regard to the conservation of water resources and the maintenance of green areas, essential elements for local sustainability. The research was based on a qualitative-quantitative approach, integrating the analysis of environmental data with a review of current public policies. Environmental degradation in the city's streams, resulting from deforestation and disorderly urban expansion, compromises water quality and local biodiversity, aggravating public health problems and threatening long-term sustainability. The absence of effective public policies and integrated urban planning intensifies these problems, highlighting the need for strategies for environmental management and the conservation of natural resources. The research identified that the areas most affected by degradation are located in regions of recent urban expansion, where the lack of adequate infrastructure contributes to water pollution and deforestation. In addition, the analysis of public policies showed significant gaps in the application and enforcement of environmental laws, with emphasis on the lack of integration between the federal, state and municipal spheres. Based on these findings, the study proposed a set of strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of urban growth on the environment, including the creation of protected areas, the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, and the strengthening of environmental governance. The research also highlights the importance of involving civil society in the urban planning process, promoting active participation in the formulation of policies that consider local specificities. It is concluded that the conservation of the streams of Porto Velho is essential not only for environmental preservation, but preservation areas; degraded areas; Environmental Public Policiesalso for the sustainable socioeconomic development of the region. The proposals presented aim to contribute to the construction of a more balanced city, where urban growth does not compromise the quality of life of future generations.
