AMACRO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ZONE: THE EXPANSION OF THE DEFORESTATION FRONTIER IN THE SOUTHWESTERN LEGAL AMAZON

This thesis analyzes the AMACRO Sustainable Development Zone (ZDS AMACRO) based on its spatial configuration of deforestation as a factor in the sustainability of its occupation, from 2008 to 2022. The region refers to the frontier portion among the States of Amazonas, Acre and Rondonia, southwest of the Legal Amazon. Analyzes of both the ZDS AMACRO as a whole and the contributions of land categories present in it are considered, such as: conservation units, rural settlements, indigenous lands and private rural properties. The methodology used consisted of geoprocessing techniques using the ArcGis 10.8 software with data from the Amazon Deforestation Calculation Program - PRODES/INPE for deforestation, data from Burnings (BDQ/INPE) for hotspots and data from MapBiomas in order to estimate areas with agricultural activities. Descriptive statistics and linear regression analyzes were carried out to better understand the influence of land categories on deforestation in the AMACRO ZDS. The results show that deforestation in the AMACRO ZDS averaged 1,852 km² from 2008 to 2022, with an increasing trend without reaching stability with peaks in 2021 (3,553.7 km²) and 2022 (4,236.9 km²). Fires, as components associated with deforestation activities, exhibited numbers of hotspots with patterns similar to deforestation data in km² both on the AMACRO ZDS scale and on the scale of the portions of each state that make up the zone. The period from 2018 to 2022 it was evidenced a marked expansion of the frontier in the portion of Rondonia to the portion of Amazonas in the AMACRO ZDS, proven by the deforested areas, their coefficients of variation and numbers of hotspots. A positive linear relationship is found between areas with agricultural activities and deforestation, the most intense being observed in the Amazonas portion of the AMACRO ZDS (R² = 0.9632), indicating that the increase in agriculture is more strongly associated with deforestation when compared to the portions of the AMACRO ZDS of Rondonia (R² = 0.849) and Acre (R² = 0.8536). The predominance of deforestation occurred in rural settlements, among their land units, representing an average of 39.7% of the deforestation of the AMACRO ZDS and in private rural properties with an average of 16.4%. In contrast, conservation units and indigenous lands contributed an average of 9.8% and 0.65%, respectively. In rural settlements, private rural properties, conservation units and indigenous lands of the AMACRO ZDS, deforestation occurred in a directly proportional manner with low dispersion (R² = 0.98, 0.96, 0.96 and 0.69 respectively), showing the marked direct relationship of deforestation of these categories with the total deforestation of the AMACRO ZDS. The combination of these results shows the continuity of the tension between economic development and environmental preservation, both in its conservation units and in its indigenous lands, rural settlements and private rural properties, indicating contradictions with its own proposal for a sustainable development zone and establishing itself as a region of expansion of the deforestation frontier in the southwest of the Legal Amazon.
