RESUMO:

Tumors of the central nervous system (CNST) represent the second most frequent form of malignant tumors in childhood and the second leading cause of death associated with neurological diseases, affecting individuals of all age groups. In adults, CNST are the sixth most common cause of death in patients with malignant tumors. The carcinogenic potential of mercury (Hg) is controversial in the literature. Mucosal involvement accompanied by cell invasion, inhibition of DNA repair mechanisms, genetic abnormalities, oxidative stress induction, pro-inflammatory chemokines such as IL-8 and micro RNA's capable of inducing tumorigenesis are related to oncogenesis for that metal. In the present study, we analyzed possible associations between Hg and CNST in 65 patients who underwent surgical treatment and whose diagnoses were confirmed by an anatomopathological study, between December 2017 and December 2019, in the state of Rondônia, in the Western Amazon, Brazil. The measurement of Hg was performed on hair and tumor tissue. No statistically relevant differences were found between the levels of total Hg detected in malignant and benign tumors, according to the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), nor between gliomas and the other primary and secondary tumors of the nervous system, included in the study. The same results were found when analyzing the total Hg levels in the patients' hair and blood. The concentration of mercury in tumors of the nervous system correlated positively with the concentration of mercury in hair and blood, being directly proportional. The fact that the study was carried out in the Western Amazon was important because of the endemic aspect, the environmental issues and the occupational activities in the region that offer a greater risk of exposure to Hg.
