SUMMARY:

This study analyzes the relationship between illegal mining activities in the Madeira River and the environmental perception of miners, with an emphasis on the socioeconomic and environmental dimensions associated with this activity. The research is structured around three main axes: (a) bibliometric review of the state of the art on the subject, (b) analysis of risks and vulnerabilities associated with mining, and (c) categorical analysis of the environmental perception of miners. The relationship between humans and the environment is configured as a complex and holistic field that encompasses several areas of knowledge, configuring itself as both an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary domain. This study examines the link between miners and the environment, considering how mining activities affect this relationship and how the environmental perception of miners can influence their attitudes and behaviors. The analysis of miners' discourses is used to identify narratives and representations that reveal their perceptions and motivations in relation to the environment. The research is conducted in the Humaita region, Amazonas, an area of significant relevance in the context of mining in the Amazon. A qualitative approach is adopted, and data are analyzed from multiple perspectives within the scope of the scientific method. This thesis transcends the boundaries of disciplinary science by adopting a holistic and multidisciplinary approach, integrating several fields of knowledge such as Content Analysis and Risk and Vulnerability Analysis methodologies. The theoretical frameworks used reveal that miners have a predominantly naturalistic, utilitarian and domineering perception of the environment. The hypothesis that miners do not see themselves as an integral part of the environment is confirmed, demonstrating the tendency to outsource the responsibility for environmental preservation to the government. This behavior reflects a lack of emotional connection with the territory and a deficit of pro-ecological commitment, evidenced by the lack of values such as topophilia, which would promote a sense of belonging and care for the environment. The results indicate that the environmental perception of miners contrasts with the principles of sustainability, conservation and environmental preservation, highlighting an even greater and challenging problem in building a more equitable, healthy and sustainable world. The illegality of gold mining in Humaita persists despite several government inspection actions. The survival discourse highlights a scenario full of impacts, consequences and challenges for the future of the environment. Facing these challenges requires a collaborative effort between the government, local communities and environmental organizations, with the aim of conserving Amazonian ecosystems and improving the living conditions and human rights of the affected populations.
