SUMMARY:

Riverine populations are widely known for their relationship with nature. One of the resources on which they depend is fishing, a common activity and the main source of protein. However, studies have shown a reduction in fish consumption, being associated with preferences and even more so the introduction of other foods in communities. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the fish consumption of four riverside communities in Baixo Madeira, Western Amazon and human exposure to mercury (Hg). This is research with a qualitative-quantitative and descriptive approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire with open and closed questions about fish consumption and by monitoring the participants' meals for a period of one year. There are 61 participants collaborating with the study and distributed across the communities: Calama (18), Nazare (08), Sao Carlos do Jamari (12) and Puruzinho (23). Each person received an analogue digital scale to weigh the fish and record the family's daily consumption. Fish samples were also collected for subsequent analysis of total mercury (HgT) at the Wolfgang C. Pfeiffer Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory at the Federal University of Rondonia. It was observed that Calama, Nazare and Sao Carlos do not consume as much fish, there is the presence of many other sources of protein in the diet and this may be related to access through local markets, while Puruzinho already consumes a higher quantity of fish than other communities, but industrialized foods have been more present, it is worth highlighting that It is a more isolated community. Studies of this nature contribute to understanding the current food conditions of riverside residents and thus observing dietary patterns.
