SUMMARY:

This thesis, developed within the Graduate Program in Regional Development and Environment (PGDRA), aims to analyze the presence and role of Lebanese migrants in the western Amazon, focusing on the border cities of Guajará-Mirim (Brazil) and Guayaramerín (Bolivia), articulating the concepts of migration, territory, border, identity, culture, regional development, and public policies. It is based on the assumption that these phenomena are interdependent and historically constructed, shaped by economic, social, and political dynamics across multiple scales. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative, historical, and analytical approach, based on bibliographic review, documentary analysis, and interviews with descendants and members of the local community, aiming to understand migratory trajectories, the formation of commercial networks, and processes of socioeconomic insertion in the region. The results indicate that Syrian-Lebanese migration goes beyond individual economic movements, constituting a complex social process linked to the expansion of capitalism and the formation of transnational networks, in which migrants act as economic and social intermediaries. In border areas, findings show that the border functions as a dynamic environment of circulation and interaction, where commercial networks are structured and hybrid identities are produced, contributing to the formation of a transboundary urban system. From a cultural perspective, processes of hybridity and the construction of multiple identities are observed, while in terms of regional development, these dynamics contribute to local economic organization and territorial integration. It is concluded that public policies play a central role in mediating these dynamics, being essential for promoting regional integration, reducing inequalities, and building more inclusive and sustainable territorial development strategies in border areas.
