RESUMO:

Water is essential to life and has been present on the planet since its inception. It can be found on the surface or below ground, underground. In regions such as Porto Velho - RO, where a small portion of the population is supplied with treated water, most homes use alternative sources of supply for their homes consuming the underground wellspring. Activities such as transportation and storage of fuels, use of septic tanks, use of fertilizers and pesticides can be a risk for groundwater contamination. Since soil is a permeable layer and many elements are easy to move and dilute in water, it is not difficult for these waters to be contaminated. This work aimed to verify the contamination of the underground water source in the residences around the gas stations, regarding the contamination by organic and inorganic compounds that can cause risks to the water consuming population. All points where samples were collected were very close to the station, at most 50m away, and in homes where there was no sewage and running water. Therefore, regions very conducive to groundwater contamination that is consumed on site. The collections were carried out in 2 seasonal periods (low water and high water). The analyzes showed nitrate and ammonium contamination in the 2 seasonal periods and BTEX presence was detected only in the high water period. Thus, it can be said that most of the sampled households have been contaminated by sewage or domestic waste. However, for groundwater contamination by fuels, despite the validation of the analytical method, no detectable concentrations were found in the low water period. There is an urgent need to implement a sewage collection and treatment network and to establish a constant monitoring program for groundwater in the city of Porto Velho.
