Groundwater is vastly exploited for a variety of uses, including human consumption. The man form of extraction is through wells, which can be tubular or excavated. These wells, depending on their structure, can be an entry channel for various biological and inorganic contaminants. In the city of Porto Velho, excavated wells, popularly called “amazonas” are quite common and often the water is not properly treated before use. Through an oscillating migration flow in the city and the lack of basic sanitation, these groundwater are potentially exposed to microbiological and chemical contamination. Thus, the objective of this study was to indicate and specify which organisms and elements constitute such contamination. A total of 74 water samples were collected from excavated and tubular wells in the urban area of the city of Porto Velho in 3 different seasonal periods (vazante, low water and flood). These samples went through analysis of physical-chemical parameters, microbiological, trace elements cations and anions. Results point to the presence of total and thermotolerant coliforms in 89% and 81%, respectively, of the evaluated samples. There was a prevalence of the genera Escherichia, Enterobacter, Cronobacter and Citrobacter. Nitrate showed averages above the standard recommended by the Ministry of Health, 24 mg.L-1 for excavated wells and 14.1 mg.L 1 for tubular wells. Trace element contents were above what the legislation recommends in 8 points for aluminum (> 0.2 mg.L-1), 2 for copper (> 2 and 1 mg.L-1) and one for manganese (> 0.1 mg.L-1). Seasonality influenced the electrical conductivity, nitrate, sodium, chloride and ammonium parameters for higher concentrations during flood periods, and the pH and thermotolerant coliforms parameters for higher concentrations during the vazante period. These results highlight the precariousness of basic services in the city of Porto Velho and the absence of actions to combat the degradation of groundwater. Thematic maps prepared can assist decision makers to improve actions related to public health and WASH (drinking water, sanitation and hygiene).
