IDEOLOGIES OF FAMILY FARMERS ON THE RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION OF AMAZONIC ECOSYSTEMS
Ethnoknowledge; discourse analysis; ecosystem services.
The process of agricultural colonization that occurred since the 1970s in Rondônia significantly reduced the original forest cover in the agricultural use areas of the state. In Castanheiras, Novo Horizonte D'Oeste and Rolim de Moura, where this study was done, 81% of the municipal territories were deforested by 2020. The fragmentation of natural vegetation reduced the ecological stability of agroecosystems and nature's capacity to provide ecosystem services. To minimize these effects, six vegetation restoration initiatives supported, between 2008 and 2020, 585 farms to restore more than a thousand hectares of forests (0.3% of the total area of these municipalities). This thesis results from transdisciplinary research in the field of ethnoscience, to categorize the ideologies, present in the discourses of family farmers (AF) of two groups, engaged and not engaged in forest restoration. The hypothesis investigation is that there are different ideologies that determine the engagement of AF in the conservation and/or restoration of the vegetation of its properties. The general objective is to support rural communication strategies to facilitate this engagement. We seek to identify the socioeconomic challenges of the AF for ecological restoration; the ideologies present in the discourses of AF related to ecosystem services; characterize extrinsic and intrinsic discursive formations related to the AF decision-making process; to investigate the positions and influences of socio-community relations and their interferences for the conservation and/or restoration of vegetation. Data collection was performed with 40 AF, randomly drawn from a reference population composed of 235 small farms, engaged in forest restoration initiatives between 2013 and 2015 and 2017 to 2019. From the consent of the interviewed subjects, socioeconomic information was recorded and their answers to open questions were recorded. As a method to identify ideologies, characterize discursive formations and investigate positions and influences, the transcription of responses to evaluation of ethnoknowledge by French Discourse Analysis (ADf) was performed. The coding of this analytical process was supported by the use of the Software MAXQDA Analytics Pro 2020 - Release 20.0.4. From the tabulation of socioeconomic information and codification of the ADf, descriptive and inferential analysis was used to present and discuss the results. Two socioeconomic challenges of family farming for ecosystem restoration were defined. Seven identified ideologies, obtained by coding 32 discursive formations, grouped under four perspectives of ethnoknowledge. Ecosystem services was the most representative perspective, present in 60% of the 625 discursive segments encoded. It is subdivided into four ideologies, characterized by 17 discursive formations. Provision services is the only ideology present in 100% of interviews, regulation is at 70%, cultural 58% and habitat 35%. The intrinsic decision-making factors represent 25% of the segments, consisting of an ideology and five discursive formations. Extrinsic decision-making factors represent 8% of the segments, consisting of an ideology and six discursive formations. The socio-community relations, which occurs in 7% of the segments, consists of two ideologies, based on four discursive formations. The hypothesis investigated by the study was confirmed, and the established theoretical framework offers ways for the development of ecosystem restoration programs in the Amazon.
