Geographical Indication and Regional Development: An Analysis of the Potential in Rondônia
Geographical Indications. Sustainable Development. Rondônia.
This thesis investigates the role of Geographical Indications (GIs) as a strategic instrument for economic, social, and environmental development in the state of Rondônia, located in the Western Amazon. GIs, by linking the quality and characteristics of a product to its specific geographical origin, offer a unique opportunity for the valorization of regional products, preservation of traditional knowledge, and promotion of sustainability. Rondônia, with its rich biodiversity and extensive agricultural production, presents significant potential for the implementation of GIs. Products such as robusta coffee, tambaqui, and cocoa have already achieved certification. By applying the GI Identity Model, other possibilities for GIs in Rondônia were analyzed, with Brazil nuts, pasture-raised beef, açaí, and artisanal cheese being classified as having high potential. The thesis explores how GI certification can add value to these products, differentiating them in the global market, promoting environmental conservation, and strengthening local communities. From an economic perspective, GIs are seen as a tool capable of enhancing the competitiveness of regional products, raising their prices, and improving producers' income. Certification not only protects geographical names but also ensures that traditional production practices are maintained and valued. Additionally, by promoting sustainable management practices, GIs contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the conservation of biodiversity. Socially, GIs have the potential to strengthen the cultural identity of communities, promote social inclusion, and reduce poverty, especially in rural areas. The valorization of traditional know-how and the promotion of a collective brand create a sense of belonging and pride within communities, while also facilitating organization and cooperation among producers. The thesis concludes that the implementation of GIs in Rondônia faces challenges, such as the need for producer training, infrastructure improvement, and the development of effective public policies. However, with appropriate support and the creation of strategic partnerships, GIs can become an effective tool for sustainable development in Rondônia, promoting long-term economic, social, and environmental benefits. Thus, GIs are presented not only as a tool for intellectual property protection but also as an integrated territorial development strategy capable of fostering innovation, preserving the environment, and strengthening regional identities in Rondônia.
