RESUMO:

Piper hispidum Swingle is a shrub native to the lowlands of Mexico, of pantropical distribution. The species contains amides, benzenes, benzoic acids, flavonoids and volatile oils. Its antifungal, antimicrobial, antiplasmodial, leishmanicidal and insecticidal activities can be used in medicine and agriculture, which has stimulated chemical and pharmacological research. The traditional propagation of Piper species is not efficient due to the low viability and seed germination, recalcitrance, and poor or slow rooting of cuttings. The objective of the present research was the regeneration of P. hispidum, promoting the formation of roots and shoots in leaf sections, aiming at the establishment of an alternative method of propagation of this species. For this, sheets of three sizes were used: small: 4-7 cm in length; medium: 7-10 cm; and large: 10-13 cm. The leaves were cut into halves (apical and petiolar) by transversal cut in the middle of the leaf blade. The cut parts of the halves were immersed in a solution of the indolebutyric acid (IBA) at 1000 ppm for 5 and 20 minutes, or not submitted to the hormone. The cuttings were individually placed in plastic cups (400 mL) containing sand and soil (1: 1), in a greenhouse at the Embrapa Rondônia Experimental Field, in Porto Velho. Three positions of the leaf halves were used: apical: apical half with cross section down; basal: petiolar half with cross section upwards; and inverted basal: peciolar half with crosssection downwards. After 82 days the number and length of roots and shoots were evaluated. Treatments that resulted in lower root proliferation induced larger and more numerous shoots. The size of the leaves did not affect the number of roots, but the small leaves produced larger and larger shoots. The immersion in IBA induced the production of roots in the cuttings. However, the number and length of shoots were greater when there was no immersion in the hormone. The apical portion generated more numerous and long roots, but the inverted basal and basal portions produced a greater number of shoots, and the inverted basal portion resulted in a longer shoot length. Leaf cuttings can be a practical for the vegetative propagation of P. hispidum. For this, small leaves can be used as a source of inverted basal stakes, without auxin treatment.
