SUMMARY:

Human milk (HM) is essential for the development and survival of newborns and children. Some micronutrients present in HM have been highlighted in public health actions due to their importance in the pregnancy cycle, especially in fetal development, such as Iron, which plays a role in brain growth, and Zinc in embryogenesis. Knowing these levels is crucial for guiding prenatal care and ensuring that babies receive the nutrients necessary for healthy development. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the concentration of Iron and Zinc present in the HM of postpartum women in the state of Rondônia. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study in which postpartum women treated at the Ary Pinheiro Base Hospital were selected who, after accepting the terms of the study, provided a sample of HM and answered a questionnaire with sociodemographic and economic data, the mother's previous history and data on the newborn. The concentration of micronutrients was determined through a validated analytical spectrometry technique using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) at the Wolfgang C. Pfeiffer Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory of the Federal University of Rondônia. A total of 271 postpartum women with a mean age of 26.48 ± 6.85 years, 17% of whom were adolescents and 83% were adults, were eligible for this study. Approximately 77.5% were married or cohabiting and 22.5% were single, with varying levels of education. The majority reported living in urban areas (78.6%), with 50.2% coming from the Madeira-Mamoré health region. Approximately 62.4% had a family income of 1-2 minimum wages and 58.3% did not work outside the home. The pre-gestational Body Mass Index showed that 60.9% of the adolescents and 47.6% of the adults had adequate weight before pregnancy. The vast majority (97%) received prenatal care, with an average of 7.05±2.9 consultations, most of which were carried out in the public health network (86%). 76% reported having some type of previous morbidity and 74.9% stated having had some health problem during pregnancy. The average birth weight (g) was 2317.5±923.9, and 71.8% had an adequate weight for gestational age. Regarding the milk phase, the 271 samples were classified as: 173 colostrum, 58 transitional milk and 40 mature milk. The concentrations of iron and zinc (mg/L) found were, respectively: 1.413±3.72 and 6.06±5 in colostrum; 1.273±1.1 and 4.126±2.7 in transitional milk and 1.7±1.9 and 3.02±1.8 in mature milk. When comparing with values already found in the literature, we observed that the levels found are within the already known range and in some cases, even above the recommended values. These partial results provide a basis for the progress of the research in order to fully meet the objectives set.
