SUMMARY:

Human milk (HM) is essential for the development and survival of newborns and
children. Some micronutrients present in HM have been highlighted in public health
actions due to their importance in the pregnancy cycle, especially in fetal development,
such as Iron (Fe) which acts on brain growth and Zinc (Zn) in embryogenesis. Knowing
these levels is crucial to guide prenatal care and ensure that newborns receive the
nutrients necessary for healthy development. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the
concentration of Fe and Zn present in the HM of postpartum women in the state of
Rondonia. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study in which
postpartum women treated at the Ary Pinheiro Base Hospital were selected and, after
accepting the terms of the study, provided a sample of HM and answered a
questionnaire with sociodemographic and economic data, mother's previous history,
newborn data and a weekly Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The concentration of
Fe and Zn was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission
Spectrometer (ICP-OES) at the Wolfgang Christian Pfeiffer Environmental
Biogeochemistry Laboratory of the Federal University of Rondonia. The food items in
the FFQ were grouped into eight groups, as recommended by the Food Guide for the
Brazilian population: Beans, Cereals, Roots and Tubers, Vegetables, Fruits, Nuts, Milk
and Cheese, and Meat and Eggs, with a frequency of consumption established by
scores, ranging from “never” to “more than six times a week”. A total of 277
postpartum women with a mean age of 26.54±6.9 years were eligible for this study, of
which 16.6% were adolescents and 83.4% were adults. The pre-gestational Body Mass
Index showed that 60.7% of the adolescents and 47.2% of the adults had an adequate
weight before pregnancy. Regarding the milk phase, the 277 samples were classified as:
178 colostrum, 58 transitional milk, and 41 mature milk. The concentrations of Fe and
Zn (mg/L) found were, respectively: 1.42±3.7 and 5.97±4.9 in colostrum; 1.25±1.1 and
4.41±2.9 in transition milk and 1.65±1.8 and 3.26±1.8 in mature milk.
