USE OF SOCIAL CARTOGRAPHY IN UNDERSTANDING THE SOCIO-TERRITORIAL IMPACTS CAUSED BY THE TUCURUI HPP IN THE QUILOMBOLA COMMUNITY VILA DE PEDERNEIRAS-PA
Tucuruí Hydroelectric Plant. Vila de Pederneiras. Territory. Impacts
Given its potential in terms of natural resources, the Amazon region has aroused the interest of various countries in the use and management of these resources, as has been seen with the construction and installation of major projects. Hydroelectric power stations are examples of these projects present in the region, as are mining companies, settlement programs, gold mines and others. In the state of Para, many of these projects have been carried out, as was the case with the Tucurui Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), the first hydroelectric power plant to be set up in the state, in the municipality of the same name, located in the southeastern region of Para, which makes up the list of the largest hydroelectric power plants in Brazil and the world. However, many negative consequences have arisen from this grandiose project, such as environmental impacts that have affected the fauna and flora of the areas surrounding the dam. In this way, the work analyzes the period between 1984 and 2024, a timeframe defined from the completion of construction and the start of operation of the Tucurui HPP to the present day, where the actions corresponding to the energy project have changed the socio-territorial dynamics of the Vila de Pederneiras quilombola community. The general objective of the research is to analyze, within the time frame between 1984 and 2024, the presence of the Tucurui HPP and its elements of functionality, which have modified the territorial and socio-territorial and economic dynamics of Vila de Pederneiras through the lens of Social Cartography as a methodology. The specific objectives seek to: a) Present the historical-geographical facts in Tucurui with the arrival of the HPP on a time scale, which helped to make up the village of Pederneiras. b) Understand the transformative processes in the village of Pederneiras resulting from the implementation of the Tucurui HPP through the prism of Social Cartography. c) Identify the economic and socio-territorial changes in the community over the defined time period. Thus, the category of territory analysis allows us to see how the hydroelectric plant influences the power relations exercised over the village of Pederneiras, stemming from interests that go beyond the local scale, with dimensions that go beyond the Amazon scale. Therefore, the research used the historical-dialectical method with a quantitative and qualitative approach to the data collected, such as documentary research and application of a form on the Tucurui HPP and field research. The results show, based on the method with the contribution of social cartography as a tool and the recovery of memories and information, that there have been transformations in the socio-economic and socio-territorial spheres, directly affecting the residents' way of life, as well as highlighting the negligence of the government in relation to the community. Finally, the research presents, through existing and collected data, how the construction and operation of the Tucurui HPP has impacted on the socio-territorial relations of the families of Vila de Pederneiras. The results of the research also contribute to the discussion about the effects caused by the energy expansion destined for the Amazon, based on government actions surrounding these hydroelectric projects.
