SUMMARY:

The Extrema District, located in the Ponta do Abunã region, in Porto Velho, in the state of Rondônia - Brazil, presents a unique scenario, where popular knowledge and practices of health care play a crucial role. In this territory of extensive cultural diversity, inhabited by Bolivians, former rubber tappers, indigenous peoples and migrants from various regions of Brazil, traditional knowledge holders stand out as central historical subjects in the promotion of health. These experts of ancestral practices operate in an environment where traditional methods coexist with technological transformations, challenging the coexistence of different forms of knowledge. The method chosen for this research is phenomenological, as it allows a deep understanding of the experiences lived by traditional knowledge holders, focusing on the way they perceive, interpret and experience technological transformations in their lived space. Phenomenology, by placing the subject at the center of the investigation, makes it possible to internalize the meaning that these popular therapists attribute to their practices that do not conform to the current technological context. The methodology used will be through oral history research, since this values the knowledge of those who have experienced and experimented with the practices and changes that have occurred in health care. Through oral history, it is possible to rescue and preserve the narratives of traditional scholars, ensuring that their memories and knowledge are transmitted in an authentic manner. Semi-structured interviews with these actors will allow for greater flexibility in data collection, allowing their narratives and experiences to be expressed in a richer and more detailed manner. The chosen category of analysis is geographic space, according to Paul Claval's view, since he understands space as a social and cultural construction. In this sense, the study will seek to analyze how traditional scholars interact with the territory, how their practices are influenced by the space they inhabit, and how the geographic context shapes the relationship between popular knowledge and technological pressures. The study aims to explore the geographic dimensions of traditional knowledge in a context of increasing computerization and technological advancement, analyzing how popular therapists adapt and resist these pressures and the new demands of society. This knowledge is deeply rooted in local culture and interaction with the environment, reflecting a holistic view of health that integrates physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The preservation and transmission of this knowledge are threatened by modernization, which makes it vital to understand how these practices continue to be valued by the community. This work will investigate the challenges faced by traditional knowledge-makers in a context of technological change, the perceived effectiveness of these practices and the power dynamics that shape the interactions between traditional forms of care and new technologies. By addressing these issues, the research seeks to contribute to the valorization of traditional therapies and to a broader understanding of the transformations in institutionalized health practices in the District of Extrema/RO.
