SUMMARY:

This dissertation analyzes radio as a space for the preservation, mediation, and construction of Northeastern cultural identity in Porto Velho, the capital of Rondônia. The study is based on the premise that radio, more than a means of communication, acts as an instrument of collective memory and cultural resistance, especially in the context of Northeastern migrations to the Amazon beginning in the second half of the 20th century. The investigation considers the historicity of radio in Brazil and Rondônia, highlighting its origins, technological transformations, and social role over the decades, as well as the relevance of orality as a vehicle for cultural recording and the transmission of popular knowledge. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach, based on a bibliographic review, document survey, and semi-structured interviews with broadcasters, musicians, and members of the Northeastern community. Of particular note is the analysis of the program "Raízes Nordestinas," broadcast in Porto Velho, which became a benchmark for the dissemination of rhythms such as forró, baião, and xote, as well as for the dissemination of linguistic expressions, accents, and narratives that reinforce the sense of belonging among migrants and their descendants. The interviews revealed that, even after decades of settling in Rondônia, many migrants maintain the distinctive accent of their region, while their children and grandchildren have a more mellow accent, reflecting their contact with northern culture and the process of linguistic adaptation. The results demonstrate that radio plays a central role as a cultural mediator, connecting past and present, origin and destiny, tradition and modernity. Through the selection of musical repertoires, local stories, and popular expressions, radio hosts not only entertain but also act as agents of symbolic resistance, reaffirming cultural practices that could be lost in a context marked by migration and cultural heterogeneity. The study also shows how cultural centers, accordion gatherings, and festivities associated with Northeastern culture, promoted and publicized by local radio stations, serve as symbolic places that keep traditions alive, reinforcing collective memory and community cohesion. The conclusion is that radio in Rondônia is not just a communication channel, but a space for identity affirmation and social mediation, fundamental to maintaining Northeastern culture outside its original territory. By giving migrants a voice and valuing their cultural expressions, radio contributes to the construction of a sense of belonging that spans generations, even in the face of the inevitable linguistic and cultural transformations of the migration process. The dissertation thus contributes to studies on media, culture, and identity, revealing the power of sound waves as guardians of memory and as bridges between times, spaces, and histories.
