SUMMARY:

This study on female body-territory and the geography of femicide examines the spatial and territorial dynamics of femicides in Rondonia, investigating gaps in state protection, power relations, and affective nuances between victims and perpetrators as a foundation for effective public policies. Understanding femicide within the context of Latin American colonization, this research views the crime as a historical continuation of gender violence, inherited from colonial patriarchy and maintained by practices that still subjugate women. From this perspective, it analyzes the role of Brazilian laws that aim to protect women and guarantee human rights, highlighting how the absence of state protection perpetuates acts of genderbased violence, leaving women vulnerable to inadequate security measures. At this point, the thesis delves into the analysis of affective relationships that often mask pre-femicide violence, forming the “continuum” of violence that precedes and culminates in the crime. The study maps the spaces where these aggressions occur, aiming to provide an empirical basis for the development of more effective preventive policies. By conducting interviews with victims who survived femicide attempts and with family members of those who did not, the research reveals subjective perceptions that help construct a detailed narrative of the characteristics and motivations of these crimes. By also addressing the accounts of perpetrators and prison officials, the study seeks to understand how factors such as victims' identities and male resentment influence the escalation toward crime, often characterized as acts of hatred. The adopted methodology integrates phenomenology, inspired by the studies of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Edith Stein, Eric Dardel, and Edward Relph, with an emphasis on empathy in data analysis. This qualitative research gathers primary data through interviews, questionnaires, oral histories, and mental maps, alongside secondary data from documentary and bibliographic research. The use of collective subject discourse and participatory observation allowed for capturing nuances of individual and collective experiences. Content, discourse, and body-territory analysis reveal that femicide results from a violent patriarchal model, a common outcome of gender violence in a society still marked by the "cursed legacy" of colonialism. The investigation, supported by interviewees, shows that Brazilian legislation, including the Maria da Penha Law and the femicide classification, remains insufficient to curb this crime due to structural issues and lack of resources. Moreover, femicide affects not only the direct victim but also impacts families, communities, and society, creating a cycle of pain and helplessness reinforced by impunity. Conversely, the study also reveals the resilience of female body-territories, which, despite being targets of violence, persist as spaces of resistance. By exploring the geography of femicide, this thesis contributes to re-signifying the lived space of women and supports the construction of geographic knowledge that can inform concrete protection and prevention actions, proposing that territorial and social justice work together to reverse the contemporary landscape of gender violence.
