SUMMARY:

Ecological restoration in the Amazon faces the challenge of transcending structural recovery to ensure the reestablishment of functional processes. This study assessed restoration success in the Bom Futuro National Forest (RO) by specifically analyzing seven distinct areas subjected to different techniques, such as full seedling planting, direct seeding, and assisted natural regeneration, implemented at varying times between 2014 and 2022. The methodology integrated time series from the PySEBAL algorithm (2013–2025) to estimate biophysical indicators and used Random Forest predictive modeling to construct counterfactual scenarios. Pixel-by-pixel chrono-sequential analysis revealed a declining trend in biomass production within the unit, influenced by extreme climatic events such as El Niño. The Random Forest model demonstrated high robustness for estimating Biomass Production (R2=0.95) but highlighted notable spatial heterogeneity in responses. Among the evaluated areas, only Area 5 showed a positive median, reflecting values slightly higher than the reference scenario for biomass production, while older interventions, such as those in Areas 1 and 7, displayed functional performance inferior to the counterfactual scenario. It is concluded that, while remote sensing detects recovery trajectories, limitations in modeling certain variables and the variability of local results warrant caution in interpreting restoration success.
